アマゾン川よりはるかに高く、アンデス山脈の尾根に位置するマチュピチュは、1532年にスペイン軍がアンデス地域に侵攻し、インカ帝国を征服した際にも、その存在を知られることはありませんでした。

パチャクティ皇帝のために1450年ごろ築かれたこの壮麗な都市は、長らく放棄されて雲霧林に包まれ、地元の人々にのみ知られていました。1911年になってようやく、イエール大学の歴史家ハイラム・ビンガムによって世界に紹介されました。

3千年におよぶ洗練されたアンデスの農耕社会は、インカ帝国（1438年～1532年）へ結実しました。マチュピチュは、インカ文の工学技術の頂点であり、その芸術的、社会的、建築学的、そして技術的な卓越性を象徴する遺跡です。

Perched on an Andean mountain ledge high above the Amazon, Machu Picchu remained hidden when the Spanish invaded the Andean Region in 1532, conquering the Inca.

Abandoned and swallowed up by the surrounding cloud forest, the stunning city, built for the Emperor Pachacuti around 1450, was known only to local people until Yale historian Hiram Bingham introduced it to the rest of the world in 1911.

Three thousand years of sophisticated Andean agricultural societies culminated in the Inca Empire (1438-
1532). Machu Picchu represents the pinnacle of Inca engineering and is the iconic expression of Inca artistic, organizational, architectural, and technical prowess.
