ドミニコ会修道院の創設者で13世紀初めの聖人ドミニクスの肖像です。脇の犬は松明を咥えており、その端に火が灯っていることは、聖人の背後に仄かな光の広がることから確認できます。
本作は、17世紀スペイン絵画を代表する画家のひとりであるスルバランが27歳の頃、セビーリャのサン・パブロ・エル・レアル修道院のために描いたと考えられます。画面の左右と下辺には後代の手によりカンヴァスが追加されていますが、漆黒の背景から静かに人物が浮かび上がる、瞑想性に満ちた雰囲気は、「修道僧の画家」とも呼ばれるこの画家の真骨頂を示しています。

Saint Dominic lived in the early 13th century and founded the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church. This portrait shows a dog at his side holding a torch in his mouth, with the torch's lit end casting a faint light behind the saint.
This portrait by Zurbarán, a major 17th century Spanish painter, is thought to have been painted for the Convent of San Pablo el Real in Seville, when he was around 27 years old.
Strips of canvas were later added to the right, left and bottom of the composition. The image of a figure quietly emerging from the black lacquer-like background and the painting's contemplative mood convey the essence of Zurbarán's style that led to his "painter of monks" nickname.

この少女の父は、顔を含む体中に毛が生えるという特異体質ゆえ、少年時代にパリに連れてこられ、宮廷人として育てられました。その体質は、子供たち数人に遺伝します。有名になった一家は各地の宮廷から求められ、最終的にイタリアのパルマに落ち着きました。
そこで少女は有力な貴族に引き取られました。彼女が手にする手紙には、身の上が記されています。

作者のラヴィニア・フォンターナは、西洋美術史上初めて本職の画家として成功を収めた女性。表情や衣服の装飾を精緻かつ色鮮やかに描き出す手法は、この画家ならではのものです。

This little girl's father had an unusual body, covered with fur all over, including his face, so he was taken to Paris as a child and raised by a member of the court. His several children inherited his unusual features. This famous family was sought after by the reigning courts in various regions. Finally, they ended up at the court in Parma, Italy. There this young girl was adopted by a powerful aristocratic family. The letter she holds in her hand explains her heritage.

The painter of this work, Lavinia Fontana, was the first female Western painter to succeed as a professional painter. The intricately rendered, vividly depicted features and garment decoration is typical of her style.
