2.明治時代の美術
Art of the Meiji Era

通史のスタートを切るこの部屋では、1880年代半ばから1910年代初頭までに制作された作品を紹介します。江戸時代が終わって20年が経った頃、からの約30年間。この間に、日本の美術は大きく様子を変えてゆきました。当時、美術家の多くは、ヨーロッパ標準と国のオリジナリティをいい塩梅で融合して、新しい時代の日本美術を生み出そうとしていました。両者の配合はどうあるべきか？彼らはその答えを求めて全方位的に試行錯誤しています。古さあり、新しさあり、主題の混迷あり、主題と表現のミスマッチあり、技法の未消化あり。のちの「近代美術らしい」近代美術を知っている私たちには、彼らの試みが異質にも面白くも見えるわけですが、では、近代美術らしい美術とのさかいめはどこにあったのでしょうか？そんなことも考えながら、近代美術が形成されてゆく様子をご覧ください。

In this room, which kicks off a historical overview of works from the collection, we present works produced from the mid-1880s through the early 1910s. This approximately 30-year period began about 20 years after the end of the Edo Perioc (1603-1868). These years saw the state of Japanese art change drastically. At the time, many artists sought to bring Japanese art into a new era by combining European standards anc homegrown originality in a balanced manner. How should the two be blended? The search for answers plunged them into an all encompassing process of trial and error. In the results we see the old and the new, confusion of subject matter, mismatch of subject and style, and as-yet-unmastered technique. To present-day viewers who are familiar with subsequent "modern-looking" modern art, their endeavors can be both bizarre and intriguing, but at what point exactly did art begin to be modern-looking? With this question in mind, please enjoy this journey into the formation of modern art in Japan.

マネの《草上の昼食》に発想を得て描かれた作品です。三角形の構図も取り入れていますが、舞台は晩秋から冬の景色に置き換えられています。草原でくつろぐ人物は柏亭の弟妹たち。柏亭は東京の出身ですから、この風景は東京の郊外で描かれたものかもしれません。名所でもなく、農地のような用途もない、このような名づけようのない自然を愛でる感受性が近代の風景画の隆盛を生み出しました。人物の上に黄色いハッチングを重ねるなど、印象派の光や大気の表現を研究した跡がうかがえます。

Manet's Luncheon on the Grass provided the inspiration for this work. Ishii also incorporated the same triangular structure, but he changed the scene to late fall or winter. The figures relaxing on the grass are the artist's younger brothers and sisters. As Ishii was a Tokyo native, this scene was probably on the outskirts of the city. This admiration of natural scenes that were neither famous sites nor used as farmland led landscape painting to thrive in the modern era. Elements such as the yellow hatching added to the human figures suggest that Ishii studied the Impressionists depiction of light and atmosphere.

3. 開発される土地
Land Under Development

明治維新以降、文明開化の大号令のもとで日本は急速に近代化への歩みを進めました。1923（大正12）年に発生した関東大震災は東京に壊滅的な被害をもたらしましたが、その後の復興はめざましく、大規模な土地の区画整理とインフラ整備を基盤として東京は近代的な都市へと変貌を遂げます。都心部は高層化し、重工業の発展は臨海部に工場地帯を生み出しました。また鉄道の発達は都市の輪郭を郊外へ押し広げ、別荘地の形成も促しました。

After the Meiji Restoration, Japan embarked on a path of rapid modernization, inspired by the grand ideal of "civilization and enlightenment." The devastating Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 left Tokyo in ruins, but the city's subsequent reconstruction was extraordinary. Through extensive land reorganization and infrastructure development, Tokyo was transformed into a modern metropolis. There was a surge in high-rise construction in the city center, and the growth of heavy industry led to the creation of industrial zones along the waterfront. Meanwhile, expansion of the railway network pushed urban boundaries outward and encouraged the building of villas on the outskirts of the urban area.

3室では、住宅地をつくるための切通しや、電線がすぐ後ろに迫る数場、広大な空き地など今まさに開発の波に飲み込まれてゆく土地を提えた岸田劉生、坂本繁二郎、牧野虎雄の油彩画を起点に、近代都市・東京の諸相を伝える作品を紹介します。この時代はまた、大正デモクラシーやポスト印象派の影器のもとで芸術家の個性が重視された時代でもありました。モチーフそのものだけでなく、それを描いた作家たちの多様な表現にもご注目ください。

In Room 3, works by Kishida Ryusei, Sakamoto Hanjiro, and Makino Torao focus on landscapes in the midst of transformation-such as cuttings through hilly terrain in preparation for residential construction, pastures bordered by looming power lines, and sprawling vacant lots. These paintings serve as a gateway to exploring the many facets of modern Tokyo. This was also an era when artists prioritized originality, influenced by the movement known as Taisho Democracy and by Post-Impressionism in art. We invite you to appreciate not only the subject matter of these paintings, but also the diverse styles employed.

東京・日本橋にあった牛肉店「いろは」の第八支店に生まれた木村八は、消えゆく江戸情緒や、近代化によって発展する東京を題材に、数多くの絵画や文章を残しました。この作品もそのうちのひとつです。老若男女、和装洋装が入り混じり、活気に満ちた新宿駅の様子が描かれています。駅舎の壁面には「のりば案内」のほかに、色とりどりの広告看板やポスターのようなものが掲げられています。うつむき加減で往来する人々のなか、画面左下に佇むひとりの男性がいます。その視線の先には、雪上を滑るスキーヤーの姿。休日のレジャーに思いを馳せているのかもしれません。

At the time of his birth, Kimura Shohachi's family ran the no. 8 branch of the Iroha beef shop in the Nihombashi district of Tokyo. He went on to produce countless paintings and essays on the disappearance of the Edo spirit and gradual modernization of the city. This is one example. Shinjuku Station is depicted as a hive of activity, with men and women of all ages dressed both in Western and Japanese attire intermingled. In addition to a platform guide on the wall of the station building, there are a number of colorful advertisements and posters. Among the people moving back and forth with heads hanging down is a man standing still in the lower left. His gaze seem to be trained on a picture of a skier gliding through the snow. Perhaps he is thinking about how to enjoy his day off.

牧野虎雄

緑が生い茂る空き地で子供が凧揚げを楽しんでいます。祖父が風作り名人であった影響から牧野は3歳で凧揚げを覚え、成人後も親しみ続けました。「凧を上げてゐると子供が多勢集つて来て、一緒に遊べるのも素晴らしいことだ。」（「酒と風」「塔影」1936年1月）と牧野は述べています。子供の手の動きと視線、少し右側に傾いた傘が遠景の小さな風への対角線上の動きを作り出し、画面に広大な奥行きを与えています。流れるような筆致の空や雲からは風が感じられ、凧が高く揚がっている様子が伝わります。

A child is enjoying kite-flying in a vacant lot lush with greenery. Influenced by his grandfather, a master kite maker, Makino learned to fly kites at the age of three and continued to cherish this pastime into adulthood. Makino remarked: "When you fly a kite, crowds of children gather around, and being able to play together is a wonderful thing" (from "Sake and Kites," Touei, January 1936). In this composition, the child's hand gestures and gazes, coupled with the umbrella slightly tilted to the right, form diagonals pointing to a tiny kite in the distance, adding sweeping depth to the scene. The flowing brushstrokes of the sky and clouds convey the wind and bring the high-flying kite vividly to life.
