The Exquisite Goryeo Celadon II
Sparkling Jade

高麗青磁は、その美しい色の釉色のみならず、多彩な装飾技術も展開させた。なかでも、白と黒の土により文様を表す象嵌技法は、高麗で独自に発展し、唯一無二の幽玄なる文様世界を生み出した。とくに、天空を飛翔する鶴を表した雲鶴文は、高麗の人々の自然への調和や心の安寧への願いが反映された象徴的な文様モチーフといえる。

一方、実用的な器でもあった高麗青磁には、茶器や酒器、花器、薬器、文房具、化粧道具、仏教・道教の供養具・儀礼具など、さまざまな用途が見られ、時の王室や貴族をはじめとした高麗の人々の生活の一端をうかがい知ることができる。

美しい高麗青磁に込められた、高麗の人々の思いを感じとっていただければ幸いである。

The remarkable innovation of Goryeo celadon was not limited to its beautiful jade green glaze; it also included variegated decorative techniques. The inlay technique, achieved by producing motifs using white and black clay, was a uniquely Goryeo invention that created a tranquil and profound world unparalleled by any other ceramics. The inlaid decoration of flying cranes and clouds is a symbolic motif that reflects the Goryeo people's wish for harmony with nature and peace of mind.

On the other hand, practical wares for various purposes were also created in celadon. Tea and wine vessels, flower vases, medicine containers, stationery, cosmetic wares, and paraphernalia for Buddhist and Daoist rituals-these wares provide us with an insight into the lives of the Goryeo people, particularly those of the royal family and nobility.

We hope you can sense the minds of the Goryeo people imbued in these exquisite celadon wares.

青磁盞 托（せいじさん たく）

高麗では、中国宋代の喫茶や酒文化を受容し、多くの茶器や酒器お青磁でつくられた。端正な造形の盞と托は、北宋の汝窯青磁を彷彿とさせ、翡色の釉色お静かに輝く。托の台が平らなことから、酒器と考えられる。

The culture of enjoying tea and wine from Northern Song China became a fashion in Goryeo as well, leading to the production of many celadon tea and wine utensils. The sophisticated form of this cup and stand is reminiscent of Northern Song Ru celadon ware, radiating a tranquil, graceful jade-green sparkle. The flat flange suggests that this was a wine cup.

青磁象嵌 蓮菊黄蜀葵交 瓜形水注

量感あふれる瓜形の胴部12面には、黄蜀葵（トロロアオイ）・花・菊花が白黒象嵌で交互に表されている。注ぎ口を包むように蓮の葉文が立体的に彫られ、蓮の葉から静かに酒が流れ出るかのような趣が漂う。

This melon-shaped ewer has a voluminous body divided into twelve vertical planes, decorated with alternating motifs of aibika, lotus, and chrysanthemum flowers. A relief-carved lotus leaf gently embraces the spout, creating the illusion that wine is being poured out delicately from the leaf.

高麗青磁では、酸化銅を用いた鮮やかな紅色を呈する「辰砂彩」技法が見ら
れる。白象嵌の牡丹の花びらに点じられた紅が青磁釉と象嵌文様と調和し、華やかでありなから静謐で落ち着いた美しさをたたえている。

Certain Goryeo celadon wares display vivid red decorations using copper oxide. The red accents, applied to the peony petals executed in white inlay, exquisitely harmonize with the celadon glaze, producing a gorgeous yet serene and placid elegance.

青磁象嵌晨砂彩牡丹爻畫

胴の両面に白黒象嵌の牡丹が施され、辰砂彩の紅色が添えられて華やすさが増している。同種の陶片は、全羅南道康準とともに、高麗青磁の二大産地の一つである全羅北道扶安で出土している。

This jar features black and white inlay designs of peony branches on two opposite sides, with copper-red accents enhancing its gorgeous appearance. Sherds of similar wares were discovered in Gangjin, Jeollanam-do as well as in Buan, Jeollabuk-do, the two largest production areas of Goryeo celadon.

青磁羅漢像

丸顔にタレ目の微笑みが優しさをたたえなからも、高僧の威厳がにじむ。手づくね成形のため、一体ごとに異なる個性が宿る。高麗青磁の一大産地・康津の位置する全縄南道の仏教寺院道跡からも青磁の羅漢像が出土している。

This head of an arhat, even with his charming round face and humorously drooping eyes, conveys the dignity of a high priest. Hand-buile arhat statues like this piece display distinct personalities. Similar works have been excavated from the remains of Buddhist temples in Jeollanam-do, home to a major production area of Goryco celadon: Gangjin.
