The Exquisite Goryeo Celadon I
Sparkling Jade

高麗王朝では、10世紀に中国越窯の青磁の技術が導入され、青磁が誕生した。

12世紀初め、北宋の使節として高麗の都を訪れた徐兢（1091-1153）は、徹宗（1082-1135）皇帝に献上した見聞記「宜和拳使高図経」において、「陶器色之青者、麗人調之翡色、近年已来制作工巧、色澤尤佳（陶器で色の青いものを、高麗人は翡色と呼んでいる。近年制作が巧みになり、色艶がことのほか優れいている）」と記し、高麗の「翡色」（ヒスイの色）の美しさを教えている。

The Goryeo dynasty saw the birth of celadon in their land in the 10th century, when the production techniques of Chinese Yue celadon were introduced to the Korean Peninsula.

In the early 12th century, Northern Song envoy Xu Jing (1091-1153) praised the beauty of the jade-green hue of Goryeo celadon in Xuanhe Fengshi Gaoli Twing, an account he wrote during his visit to the Goryeo capital and presented to Emperor Hulzong. He noted, "The Goryeo people refer to celadon as fei se (ade color). In recent years, their quality has improved, and their color and luster have become more refined."

青磁陽刻蓮唐章文壼

胴部には蓮唐草文が浮き彫り風に表され、美しいヒスイの釉が陰影のある輝きを放っている。蓮唐草文は、子孫繁栄など幸せへの願いお込められた吉祥の文様である。

This small jar features a relief-like carving of a lotus scroll, with the illuminating jade-green glaze enhancing the beautiful shading effect. The lotus scroll design is considered auspicious as it represents the desire for happiness and family prosperity.

青磁陽刻菊花爻碗

五井の花びらを模した優美な形状の椀。内面には、繊細な彫りによって菊花が表されている。ヒスイを思わせる「翡色」の釉薬は、濃淡が織りなすグラデーションとともに、美しくきらめいている。

This elegant bowl is in the form of a five-petaled flower. The interior wall is decorated with delicately carved chrysanthemum flowers. The luminous glaze, reminiscent of jade, displays an exquisite gradation of light and shade.

青磁獅子形枕

胸に鈴を付けた二頭の獅子が背中合わせでうずくまり、楕円形の枕面を支える。
中国に起源を持つ陶磁器製の枕は、美用性と魔除けの効用を備えている。百獣の王を枕に、どんな夢を見ていたのだろう。

PILLOW WITH STAND IN THE SHAPE OF TWO LIONS

This pillow showcases two lions with bells on their chests, sitting back-to-back and supporting an oval-shaped headrest. The ceramic pillow originated in China and, while it was a practical item, it also possessed talismanic properties. What dreams did people have while resting their heads on this pillow in the shape of the "king of beasts"?

青磁象嵌 章花文 三耳壼

白土と赤土による白黒象嵌技法は高麗の青磁で独自に発展した。灰青緑色の美しい釉色の中に咲いた白黒象嵌の可憐な草花文は、愛らしい三耳壺の魅力を一層引き立てている。

The black-and-white inlay, produced using red and white clay, is a decorative technique unique to Goryeo celadon and developed individually in Goryeo. The inlaid floral plant motif under the beautiful grayish blue-green glaze enhances the charm of this graceful three-handled jar.

青磁象嵌 菊唐草文 盒

皿状の蓋が付くこうした盒は、金属器に祖型があり、舎利容器として転用された例もある。地の部分を白象嵌した、「逆象嵌」の唐草文がびったりと背景を埋め、四方には円圏内に白黒象嵌の菊花が配される。

This bowl, with a dish-like lid, is modeled after metalware. There is a similar example known to have served as a sarira reliquary. The densely packed scroll patterns are made in reverse inlay, with the background filled in with white slip. Medallions containing chrysanthemum flowers in black and white inlay adorn each of the four sides of the bowl.
