    Palazzo Vitelleschi

The edification of the Palace was patronised by the cardinal Giovanni Vitelleschi,
between 1436 and 1439 ? the most notable among the citizens of Corneto
(Tarquinia, in the Middle Ages) ? under the pontificate of Pope Eugene IV.
A relative of Vitelleschi and, his best aide, Pier Giovanni Sacchi was appointed to
the direction of the works: the employment of a series of pre-existing Medieval
structures, dating back between the XIIth and the XIVth century ? a .fortified
house/tower and, a series of dwellings along the alleyway correspondent to the
corridor leading to the end of the courtyard ? might be the explanation, either of
the irregularity of the project and the quickness with which it was executed.

One of the most notable among early Renaissance monuments in Latium, the Palace
imitates the typology of a noble Florentine dwelling: three floors overlooking an
internal courtyard, the ground floor for services, the first one for guests and, the second
one, for the dweller's private life: on this last floor, the Palatine Chapel and the
Cardinal's study room are located. The courtyard of a quadrangular shape and, with
a marble well in the center to draw water from an underground reservoir, is
circumscribed on three sides, by as many edifices with loggias and colonnades whereas,
the fourth side is closed by a high wall, provided with a communication trench.

Because of a unanimous choice of the patron and the designer, Renaissance and
Gothic patterns coexist in the work structure: portals and openings of a classical taste
are to be found alongside doors, double lancet, and Gothic-Catalan triple lancet
windows. The employment of different materials ? smooth and rusticated limestone
    for the facades; nenfro and marble for the frames and the decorative apparatus;
granite for the columns ? assigns a pictorial connotation to the ensemble. What is left
of the rich painted decorations which embellished the rooms of the Palace are:
scattered fragments in some of the rooms of the first floor and, the intact decoration
of the cardinal's little study-room on the second floor, frescoed with the stories of
Lucretia Romana, alternated with allegories of the Virtues, a work, according to
Federico Zeri, of a XVth century anonymous artist he named "painter of Corneto".
The Palace is the center of the National Archeological Museum of Tarquinia,
    inaugurated in 1924.
