Tomba dei Baccanti
Year of discovery: 1874
Dating: 510-500 BC

A short stepped corridor leads to a small burial
chamber with a gable roof.

Decoration: little flowers on the roof slopes, rosettes
and ivy leaves on the central beam. On the pediment
of the back wall, two groups of fighting animals face
the retaining console of the roof beam. A large frieze,
framed by colored stripes, is painted on the walls: in a
thicket, an orgiastic dance is taking place, probably
related to cults of Dionysus, with inebriated characters
who dance and sing holding wine cups in their hands.
The couple painted on the back wall is recognizable as
the person who commissioned the tomb and his wife.
The painter of the hypogeum is one of the Greek-
Eastern artists who immigrated to Tarquinia and went
into service with rich local patrons.

Tomba dei Leopardi
Year of discovery: 1875
Dated: around 470 B. C.

Via a narrow corridor leading downstairs one has
access to the rectangular burial room with a sloping
ceiling.
The decoration of the ceiling is chequered on the
slope and with concentric circles on the central beam.
Two leopards, facing one another on each side of a
small tree, are painted on the small fronton (usually
the triangular top-front decoration of a temple) of the
bottom wall; hence tha name of the tomb.
On the walls a big frieze with the banquet in honour of
the dead: the banqueting people, leaning on their
triclinuim and attended by naked young servants are
pictured on the bottom wall; the side-wall paintings
show other servants with the drinking vessels,
dancers and musicians enlivening the symposium.
The modest quality of the frescos, whose characters
have stiff and disproportionate bodies, is masked by
the fresh vitality of the rich polycromy.
