12. Everything Flows
"Everything flows" is a principle set forth by the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus. It expresses the idea that all things in this world are constantly changing and never remain in the same state. This resonates with the Buddhist concept of impermanence. In the modern age, when so much moves at great speed, this thought may feel selfevident, yet even things that seem identical at first glance undergo subtle changes as long as they exist in this world.
Here we have gathered paintings, sculptures, and photographs that give fixed form to celestial bodies and trees, to light and cities, and to the sea, all of which are, in fact, always shifting. When you gaze at these works, which appear still, can you sense a faint trace of movement? They also call to mind unending cycles, such as stillness and motion, sunrise and sunset, light and darkness, life and death. And these works themselves are no exception to the principle that all things are in flux. -

"I looked straight up from under the tree. Some branches were close to me, some were far away, and beyond them all was the sky. There were parts I could not see or understand even if I gazed at and tried to gauge them with my own eyes." Drawn by the "somehow unstable and mysterious space" she perceived when looking up at a tree, Hidaka eventually sought to express
"the space around me, the space that surrounded me, in and of itself," and began work on this large-scale piece. The ambitious work was completed over four winters, during which Hidaka drew trees from life, including a wild cherry on the grounds of a shrine near her home in the Tokyo suburbs. Standing in front of the painting, one experiences its unknown space as if vicariously experiencing the mysterious feeling the artist felt. -

How did the artist make this painting filled with a soft pink haze? She repeatedly applied heavily diluted acrylic paint to a canvas laid on the floor, then wiped it away with cloth. She then poured gloss polymer medium to trigger a reaction, and by wiping it off while watching the degree of drying, she produced the distinctive rough, fine particles.
Matsumoto wrote about this method as follows: "As the paint and medium pushed against each other, I felt an indescribable thrill in discovering the chance traces of water and the brush that appeared on the surface and in catching them in an instant, Letting such moments of chance guide the work was all-important in making these acrylic paintings." -

The Gardening series, in which reality and imagination intermingle, was produced in the year the artist moved from Tokyo to New York.
Depicted here is Manhattan with its towering skyscrapers. The yellow, white, orange, red, and pink forms floating in the sky float like flowers, or like smoke. The shadow of the Empire State Building and the black band extending diagonally from it suggest both a bird with outstretched wings and an airplane. Within the beautiful, dreamlike image seems to lurk the fear and anxiety that remained after the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, when two airplanes were flown into the buildings of the World Trade Center. -

Beyond Spheres is an art project that Kurita and his team dedicated to Henry David Thoreau, the American writer and natural philosopher. They photographed forests and ponds in the New England region of the United States, where Thoreau lived and worked, using the calotype technique invented by Henry Fox Talbot, and printed the images on handmade albumen paper.
They also organized forums on environmental
issues and art with the cooperation of universities and art organizations in various locations.
Reading Thoreau's Walden; or, Life in the Woods inspired Kurita to leave his career as an advertising photographer, move to the United States, and become a freelancer. Following Thoreau's example, he photographs nature as it is, with poetic sensitivity and reverence. -

Born in a village in southern Germany, Laib studied medicine at university before turning to art. He has produced works using materials that nurture life and connect to future generations, including milk, pollen, rice, and beeswax.
Exposed to Eastern thought from an early age, he developed an interest in Buddhism and Taoism after spending time in India. The series combining conical brass forms with rice began in 1983 as an expression of the connection
between the individual and the cosmos in the Indian faith of Navagraha (Nine Planets). The first version comprised nine cones, and the series later expanded to seven, twelve, and, in this work, eight. -
