亜熱帯雨林にいだかれて～初の奄美大島<Held in the Subtropical Rainforest of Amami Oshima island〉

最近Lターン移住は珍しくなくなりました。
You never be surprised to hear about L-Turn immigration these days.

三線をかかえて時々福岡にやってくるピアニストも島に移住したうちの一人です。
The pianist, who sometimes visits Fukuoka with SANSHIN, is one of those that have settled in Amami Is.

彼が島の原生林のまんなかで楽器を奏でるというので、思い切って出かけました。
I flew out there to take part in the musical concert, in which he would play instruments in the middle of primeval forest.

島に飛ぶにあたり思い当たったのが、50年ほど前にも島に移住した画家、田中一村。
It hit to my mind that there was an artist who had immigrated to settle down there until his last about 50 years before. His name is Isson Tanaka.

ひとを移住させるほどの島の魅力って？
自然？ひと？
What in Amami Oshima Is. arratcted people, its pristine nature or people?

島に飛んだ翌日に梅雨が明け、夏の始まりを感じることができた旅でした。
They announced on the second day of my stay that the rainy season seemed to be over, and real summer has begun!

This is my baggage for three days. I'm happy to carry light in traveling in summer.

福岡空港は中心地から地下鉄でわずか10分という近さ。
Fukuoka Airport is very near from the midtown, just 10 mins by subway.

なので、土曜朝一のアラビア語レッスンも休まなくていいです。（笑）
So, I didn't miss the Saturday morning Arabic lesson.

福岡―奄美大島間はJACのみの運行です。
JAC is the only to have flights between Fukuoka and Amami Oshima Is.

飛行機はとびきり小さく、沖止めです。
The airplane was so small and was parked unconnected to the platform.

この飛行機かなと思って写真を撮ったら、これは高知行きでした。
Having thought it might be the one I'd be on board, but found it for Kochi.

プロペラ機でとても小さく、機内は4列シート。
It was a small propeller plane with 4-seating in a row.

荷物棚に頭をぶつけました。
I hit my head against the cabinet.

こんな感じです。
It was like this inside.

座席はプロペラの横で、騒音がすごかったです。
My seat was beside the propeller, so noisy.

機種はこれです。
This is its type of model.

定刻より10分遅れで離陸し、奄美上空まで約1時間ですが、
大海原の上でくるくると何回も旋回します。
It departed by 10 minutes' delay and took about an hour to the destination. But it went around above the ocean near Amami several times.

他の飛行機の着陸を待っているようでした。
We were waiting for another plane's landing.

20分ほど上空で着陸待ち、無事に奄美に着陸したときはほっとしました。
What a relief to have landed safe and SOUND after 20 minutes' waiting in the air!

結局40分位遅れて到着でした。
It was about 40 mitunes' delay after all.

これが乗ってきた飛行機です。
This is the one I was on.

空港にはレンタカー会社の人が名前を書いたボードを持って待っていました。
A clerk of the rental car company was waiting for me at the airport.

会社まで20秒ほどですが、車で送迎してくれます。
She drove me to the office, just 20 seconds.

送迎の人は、60代くらいの真っ黒に日焼けした笑顔のすてきな女性でした。
She was nice, in a smiling face, sun-tanned in her 60s? at a glance.

「今日でよかったね。昨日は落雷で鹿児島発の飛行機は、上空まで来たのに引き返したよ。」
Telling me that I was lucky as the plane from Kagoshima yesterday had had to returned back because of thunder storm,

「最近は、沖縄より奄美が好きってお客さんが多いんですよ。」
and that there are more people who like Amami much better than Okinawa these days,

「奄美の何がいいんかね〜？」
Said to herself 'I wonder what in Is. attracts people?'

たった20秒の間に、もらう情報の多さ。島は口コミュニケーションの世間を持つと直感しました。
A lot of information offered by her in a short time hint me that this is a local community with mouth-to-mouth communication, I mean, analog not digital.

奄美の何がいいんかね〜？
What in Amami inspires people to visit?

それはこの旅で私が見つけることにしましょう。
That was the question to me, as a first time visitor here.

それにしてもマニュアルっぽくない接客は、私のお気に入り。島はアジアだわ！
Anyway I like the way of service looking according not to the business manual. This island, hereafter Is., is a real ASIA!

昼前のフライトだったので、おなかぺこぺこ。海沿いのカフェに飛び込みました。
Getting off the lunch-time flight, I was starved enough to jump into a cafe on the seaside.

奄美きょら海工房 グルメ・レストラン

サトウキビジュースを飲むと、南国に来た実感がわきます。
Sugarcane juice made me realize that I'm in the southern.

名瀬のホテルに荷物を置いて、すぐに末広市場を目指します。
I headed for Suehiro Market soon after dropping my baggage at the hotel in Naze.

アーケードを通るほうが早そう。
This street looks a shortcut.

77.7のラジオ局サテライトスタジオは、市場の中にありました。
The satellite of FM radio 77.7 was located in the middle of the market.

公開生放送は始まったばかり。
The public live broadcast program just started.

レトロな昔のお菓子屋さん併設のスタジオでした。
The studio was attached to a nostalgic snack shop.

外には、10人以上のお客さん。みんな彼のコアなファンなのでした。
More than 10 fans of the musician were listening to live music in a row outside.

1時間の放送が終わり、彼に挨拶したら、名瀬から近い夕陽スポットを教えてくれました。
After the program when greeting him, he was kind to show me the best sunset view point nearby.

日の入は午後7時20分位だという情報ももらいました。
He also gave me information of the sunset time of the day.

ラッキー！間に合った！
Lucky! I made it!

下にはビーチがあります。
I saw a beautiful beach down the parking lot.

見物客は徐々に増え始め、50台以上の車がやってきました。
More and more sightseers were coming up there to enjoy the scene.

もう梅雨明けたんじゃない？って思わせるくらいのきれいな空です。
What a clear and beautiful twilight sky!
It was likely that the rainy season was over!

太陽をつかめそうでしたよ。
I almost caught the sun!

スーパーで見慣れない白い飲み物を発見しました。
I found an unfamiliar white drink at a supermarket.

米粉、さつまいも粉、お砂糖を入れて発酵させたドリンク。
It is called as MIKI, or rice milk, fermented with rice powder, sweet potato powder and sugar.

飲む「かるかん」みたい。自然食品ですね。
Exactly a natural food like a drinking 'KARUKAN cake'!

おいしいので、翌日もまたいただきました。
I loved it and had another one the next day as well.

少し経つと酸味が増してきます。
It became sourer as age.

製造年月日を見て、自分の好きな発酵具合を買うのが島流と教えてもらいました。
I heard it is the Is. way for locos to see the date of production and pick up their favorite aged one.

2日目。朝梅雨明け宣言されました。
On the second day morning, it went announced public that the rainy season was over.I really meant it.

ミュージシャンの依頼で、北海道からライヴに来たという人をピックアップし、奄美自然観察の森へ向かいます。
The musician asked me to pick up his friend from Hokkaido to drive the site of the concert in the subtropical rain forest, Amami Nature Observation Forest in Tatsugo.

ハイビスカスがそこかしこに咲いています。
We saw full blooms of hibiscus along the roads here and there.

亜熱帯雨林から見上げた太陽。
Looking up the sun at noon in the forest

日差しがきついし、暑いし、蒸します。
Being sizzling sunlight, it was hot and humid.

森のコンサートでは、アウトドアの準備が必要です。
You need to prepare something for outdoor activities in the woods.

特に、虫よけスプレー、かゆみ止め、暑いけれどスニーカーが必要。
アブ、蚊、などなど。
Insect repellent, anti-itch medication and Of course, you should put on sneakers to repel mosquitoes, horseflies and sometimes habu, poisonous snakes.

さらにこの広場から、三線、タイコ、ウクレレを持ったミュージシャンたちの後を追って、参加者たちもジャングルの小さな道を登って行きます。
Following three musicians with the SANSHIN, the drum and the ukulele, the participants went up into the jungle on the small path .

半端じゃないほどの蚊取り線香が必要です。
They provided a lot of lit mosquito coils.

歩いて10分、巨石を抱いた大きな木のところで3人が演奏を始めました。
The three began to play in front of a large rock twined around by a big twisted tree.

シダの葉っぱが少しだけゆれます。
I noticed that leaves of ferns were swaying slightly nearby.

森の中は無風なのに、不思議。
For me it was strange, there was no wind blowing.

目を凝らすと、クモノ巣と思ったら、クモの糸位細くて長い脚をもったクモがいました。
Keeping my eyes peeled, there was a spider with long and thin legs on the leaf.

なぜ？大嫌いな私が発見するの？
Why should I, who is so scared of, find it?

よく見るとスレンダーで、獲物からは保護色な形態を持った自然に適合した美術品にも見えてきました。
It was slender and did look like even an art assimilated to the environment.

これが奄美独特の生物の一つなのでしょうと感心。
This might be one of Amami's peculiar creatures?

クモにくぎ付けになり、音楽どころではありません。
My eyes were stacked to it, less concentration on music.

さらに気づいたのは、クモは10匹以上もそこかしこにいるということでした。
More above, I found that more than 10 spiders were here and there.

葉っぱが揺れる感じでクモが動きます。
When it moved, a leaf was swaying a bit.

あっと気づくと、1匹は私の靴の上に載っていました。
Astonished to find one was on my shoe!

感触もないくらいの重さなのでした。
I never felt a sense of its weight and its sound.

演奏中だったので、叫び声を押し殺して、
跡はただただクモが近づかないよう足踏みして追い払うことしかできませんでした。
I could only stamp to keep it and others away, managing not to make a noise.

残念ながら音楽に集中できず。
Sorry to say, I couldn't pay attention to music.

森の広場に戻ってきて、第2幕が始まりました。
Coming back to the space, the second stage has begun.

ゆっくりと時間の流れる日曜日の午後、太陽が西に傾くまで癒しの音楽を楽しみました。
This time I enjoyed healing music till the sun went down.
That was Sunday afternoon and time went slowly.

ふと地面を見ると、大きな黄色いナメクジが這っていました。
I also found a yellow slug crawling on the ground.

筋肉の塊、貝柱のようで、おいしそうに見えたのは、不謹慎でしょうか？
It was bigger than one seen in Kyushu Is., a muscle like a scallop and looked tasty? Am I imprudent or strange?

森の中とはいえ、日焼け対策はばっちり、でも長時間外にいたせいか、少し頭痛がしてきました。
I did any UV protection even in the forest, but I had a slight headache in the sun for the day long.

虫刺されで体もかゆくて。。。
I felt itchy stung by insects.

奄美群島国立公園ビジターセンター 奄美自然観察の森 公園・植物園

打ち上げにも参加させていただきました。
I participated a cast party.

山盛り海鮮サラダに感激。
Wow! Tasty seafood salad!

やはり私はラッキーでした。前日福岡から来られたご夫婦は空の上で30分以上着陸を待ち、パイロットが「あと10分待っても着陸の許可が降りなければこのまま福岡に引き返します」と言われたそうです。
もしそうだったら本当にがっかりですね。
I was lucky to hear that the couple from Fukuoka on the day before my arrival had waited in the plane for about 30 minutes above the sea and the pilot had announced to passengers that they should go back to Fukuoka if there wasn't a landing permission within 10 more minutes.
It must be so sorry if they should have gone back.

全国各地から集まったファンの方々と楽しい時間
再会を約束して別れました。
I enjoyed talking with musicians and fans from various areas over Japan, making a promise to see them again.


それにしてもこの居酒屋さん。
Anyway, I'd like to write about a staff at the izakaya restraunt.

「予約よりも少し参加者が増えそうなのですが、いいですか？」と聞くと
「あんまりよくありません」と、商売っ気のない返事。
Being asked if it is OK if more people in number than one at the reservation call would join, he answered 'not so good' without counting profit.

それでいて嫌な顔はしません。不思議。
But strange to say, his face didn't look unhappy.

日曜日の夜遅く、長く働きたくないのね。
I thought he wouldn't like to work for more long.

ビジネス第一じゃないけれど、閉店まで居続けた私たちに淡々と給仕していました。
Still, he was working in-a-matter-of-fact way till the closing time.

これも島流かな？
Is this the way of the people in Is.?

3日目。今日は田中一村ゆかりの地を訪れます。
Oｎ the third day, I visited the places famous for Isson Tanaka.

まずは、終の棲家となったあばら家。1977年に亡くなるまで一人住んでいたそうです。
First of all, I went to the shack as his final abode, where he had lived until he passed away in 1977.

名瀬郊外の山のふもとにありました。
There had on the foot of the mountain suburb of Naze.

奄美の植生は「アジアのガラパゴス」と呼ばれることもあるくらい独特に進化した植物があるそうです。
There have a variety of species thorough unique evolution in Amami, called as 'Asian Galapagos'.

田中一村美術館に行く前に、お土産を買いに立ち寄ったスーパー。
I dropped by a supermarket to buy some souvenirs.

島のおばあちゃんたちが10時開店を待っていました。
Aged ladies were waiting for the store open.

日差しが強く暑く、セミが鳴き、子どものころの夏休みの田舎を思い出させました。
Strong sunshine, the heat and shrill of cicadas reminded me of the summer vacation in my childhood.

田中一村美術館のある奄美パーク
Tanaka Isson Museum is in Amami Park.

写真はメインの建物です。
This is the main building there.

一村が描いた植物を植えている植物園も併設されていましたが、この暑さの中外を歩き回る気になれず、ゆっくりと絵を鑑賞。

There is also a botanical garden where they grow the same plants he drew in his life here.
Not hoping to walk around in the sweltering heat, I enjoyed watching only his works inside.

寄らば大樹の蔭は涼しいかな？
Is it better under the tall tropical tree?

いえいえ、半端な暑さじゃありません。
No, it was extremely hot!!!!

This is the front gate of the museum.

気に入った絵のポストカードを探します。
I bought my favorite picture cards.

定番の自分へのお土産。
I make it a rule to buy cards for myself every time I travel.

光と影、特に影の暗さに、鮮やかな色の一点の鳥。
Lights and shadows. Impressive vivid-colored bird in the dark shadow.

すごく印象的な作品です。
It gives me a strong impression.

孤独と闘いながら、死後10年まで日の目を見なかった作品たち。
His works that were never materialized before 10 years since he had passed away

中年を過ぎて旅で訪れた当地に居を構え、
織物工房で働いたお金はすべて画材にささげ、
ただ書きたいもの―売れる絵ではなく―を描きつづけた自分に正直なひと。
He settled down to a shack in Is. where he had visited as a traveler at his middle age.
He worked hard in a textile studio ONLY to buy materials for painting.
What a pure, honest and straight person to art he was to draw only what he wanted to, not the ones for business, through his life!

旅の最後に、アヤマル岬と土盛海岸の砂浜。
Finally I visited Ayamaru Misaki Point and Tsuchimori Beach.

梅雨明け後のかっと晴れた空は見つめられないくらいまぶしい。
You couldn't stare at the bright blue sky just after the rainy season.

I was absolutely affected by heat.

ミュージシャンの彼や一村を魅了した島を自然の少しだけ体験できました。
I experienced a little bit of people and the nature here that undefined artists.

ライヴのために来ていた方々は1週間泰滞在する方もいました。
Some of participants of the event stayed there for a week or so.

「次は1週間くらいおりなよ。ウィークリーマンションもあるから」って。
The pianist suggested me that I stay more next time, maybe in a weekly condo.

島の南半分や島からフェリーの出ている小島には行けませんでした。
I didn't visit the southern half of Is. and other small islands nearby.

行くところを残すとまた来れる楽しみもあります。
You can keep the places for the next visit.

個人的には本土が寒い冬に来たいです。暑さにやられました。
My idea is to visit in winter, when it's very cold in Kyushu.
Too hot for me....

これは同じJACが運航している喜界島へ渡る小さなプロペラ機です。
This is the small propeller plane flying to Kikaijima Is.

んんん…そっちにも行きたいぞって思いながら帰途に着いたのでした。
Mmmm....Maybe I'd like to go there next time.

お土産の中で一番のおすすめは、みそピーナッツ。
One of the best souvenirs is peanuts with miso.

味噌と黒糖バランスが絶妙です。
The mixture of miso and brown cane sugar is superb!

パッションフルーツは1個部屋に置いておくと、いい香り
Put a passion fruit in your room, then it'll be covered with sweet fragrance.

ヨーグルトにかけて召し上がれ
When ripe enough, have it with yogurt.
