博多山笠の走る街を毎週歩いています＜Hakata, Old Town in Fukuoka＞

毎週1日、博多山笠の本拠地櫛田神社にほど近い冷泉（れいぜん）町を訪れる機会があります。
I'm visiting Reizen once a week, which near to Kushida Shrine, where the famous Hakata Yamakasa Festival is held in July, andin the walking distance from Hakata station.

季節はまさに博多山笠。
Now it's the festival season.

博多が年で一番にぎわう季節
Maybe the busiest season of year.

毎年7月1日〜15日が祭りの期間です。
It is held from July 1st to 15th every year.

まだ間に合いますよ。

毎週街歩きの写真をお届けします。

山笠は約700年前から行われている櫛田神社を中心とするお祭り。
It is a traditional festival mainly for Kushida Shrine started about 700 years ago.

６月下旬ごろになると、かきてと呼ばれる男衆の法被姿が街に見られるようになります。
You can see men in HAPPI called Kakite, or carriers, here and there around the end of June.

櫛田神社や冷泉町といった博多駅の北のエリアにはお寺が多く点在します。
There are a lot of temples in the north of Hakata Station.

これは小さなお堂。
This is a small temple.

隣りのビルに囲まれ、縮こまって見えますが、
朝歩くとぷ〜んとお線香の香りが漂ってきます。
It looks tiny sandwiched by modern buildings.
Aroma of incense floats in the morning.

お昼にもう一度通るころには、隣りの定食屋さんから揚げ物のにおいが大きな換気扇から吐き出されます。
On the way back around noon, the smell of fried chicken floats out from the diner next to it.

櫛田神社に近い萬行寺。
This is Mangyouji Temple near to Kushida Shrine.

巨大エンターテイメント施設、博多キャナルシティとは目と鼻の先。
The giant entertainment facility, Hakata Canal City is at a stone throw distance.

私はこちらの方が好きですね。
I like this silent temple better.

小さな交差点で、こんな看板を見つけました。
I found a sign board at a crossroad.

この曲がり角を、舁き山を担いだ男衆が曲がっていくのでしょう。
At the festival, men would carry KAKIYAKA, prtable shrine on the shoulders turn this narrow corner.

山笠のハイライトは、舁き山を担いだタイムレース。
Yamakasa's hightlight is a time race.

15日にはたくさんに人だかりでにぎわうでしょう。
There would be gathered by a lot of people in the early morning on 15th.

6月28日の中洲流れの飾り山。
The decoration YAMA of Nakasu group on June 28th

まだ制作中の表側です。
It's the front side in preparation.

上の部分が飾り山で、デコレーション用で
下の部分舁き山と思うのでうすが。
I'm not sure but the upper part is for display and the lower is for carrying.

ちょっと不確かな情報でスミマセン。

6月28日の中洲川端商店街アーケードの飾り山。
This is the decoration YAMA in Nakasu Kawabata shopping street.

これは完全に飾り山だけだと思いますが。
I think it is for showing.

天井に届きそうにそびえています。
Towering high almost to the ceiling.

買い物客の通り道よりも、祭りの方が大事という意気込みにあふれていますね。
The festival has a presence, larger than customers.

7月5日の冷泉町の通り
Reizen St. on July 5th.

通りもおめかし。
It is decorated for the festival as well.

朝早いし、まだ山は動きませんから、静かなものです。
But it is quiet because it's early morning and any YAMAKASA is not moved out yet.

電信柱や灯りの柱が榊で清められています。
Telegraph poles and streetlights are purified by Sakaki plants.

櫛田神社です。さすがの多くの人たちが参拝していました。
This is the gate to Kushida Shrine, for which the festival is.
A lot of people were making a prayer.

それと同じ数くらいの神職の方たちが、境内を掃き清めていました。
Shinto priesthoods as many as worshipers were cleaning the ground.

櫛田神社の紋がキュウリの輪切りに似ているから？
男衆は期間中キュウリを食べないそうです。様々なDon'tsがあるようです。
They say the men who join the fes don't eat cucumbers during the period because the emblem of the shrine looks like a cut in round slice of it.
There are more DON'TS and DO'S during the festival.

ここからが7月12日の街の様子です。
These are pics taken on July 12.

コンビニののれんかと思いきや
西流れのメンバーのお店のようです。
Look at the shop curtain, which means that it supports Nishi Nagare group.

少しピンボケしていますが、櫛田神社の前に備え付けられたタイコ。
It is the drum to announce the start in front of the shrine.

15日の朝にはタイコの音が目印になるでしょうね。

神社の境内に、おじゃましました。
I entered in side the shrine.

朝ですが、たくさんの方がお参りに来ています。
As a matter of fact, many people visited there to make a prayer.

境内にも飾り山が。
There was a KAZARIYAMA, decoration inside.

御手水の水の音が心地よかったです。
I felt so comfortable to hear water running at the washing place.

これは大博通りに面した西流れの舁き山。
This is the portable shrines of Nishi Nagare group put faced to the big street.

うやうやしく飾られていました。
A lot of decoration

表示より中に近寄ってはいけません。
Keep out. You shouldn't touch it. Women never touch it.

見送りと呼ばれる後ろの飾りです。
It is the back side called as seeing-off

曳山は広い歩道に鎮座しています。
その隣りには大通りですが、朝なので車は少なく。

これが詰所。紺色の幕がかけられています。
This is thestation of Nishi Nagare, hung of navy blue curtains.

神聖な場所のようです。
It looks a holy place.

女性は入れないので、遠くから眺めます。
Women cannot enter it, so I watched it from a distance.
I've seen the festival distantly so far from the view point of gender equality. This was the first time to see them.

2002年までは「女人禁制」の看板が置かれていたことが女性差別との非難を受け、取り除かれましたが、不文律として残っているようです。
The sign of ’Off Limit of Women' had been put there before 2002, when it was cleared away, though it looks to be still remained as an unwritten rule.

That's the main reason why I have been keeping myself away from this festival.

法被姿の男衆がそろそろ集まる時間なのでしょうか？
Is there a meeting now? Men in HAPPI were gathering in front of the station.

I'm so excited to have an opportunity to see a Goryon'san soon, which means wife, mainly, who is working for family business with her husband. She is working for a Japanese-style restaurant, too. In a word Goryon'san are supporting the festival and men behind as a role as woman.
