勇敢で威厳に満ちた風貌が強い印象を与える神将像。重厚で引き締まった体躯にみなぎる充実感は圧巻で、瞳に黒光りする銅製の鋲を付ける技法が迫真の念怒相をますます精彩あるものにしている。

This guardian deity exudes a brave and dignified presence that leaves a powerful impression. The figure's solid, tightly built body conveys an overwhelming sense of vitality, and the technique of inlaying copper rivets reflecting a black luster from the eyes enhances the realism of its fierce, wrathful expression.

もと奈良市法蓮町の瑞景寺に安置されていた。顔などに補修の痕はあるが、高く結い上げられ螺旋を描く宝髻（ほうけい）や、鬢髪（びんぱつ）が耳を三条にわたってよぎり、うち一条がやはり螺旋を描くなど、その装飾的な表現は本像の個性。

This image was formerly housed in Zuikei-ji Temple in Hörencho, Nara city. The face shows signs of restorations, but the high spiraling topknot and the three side tendrils of hair sweeping across the ears show the individualistic decorative expression of this image.

髻（もとどり）の周囲に頭上面のあとをのこす十一面観音像。ほぼ全身を一材から彫出する一方、細部表現には乾漆（かんしつ）も用いており、奈良時代と平安時代初期の特色をあわせもつ。一部に当初の彩色がのこる点でも貴重。

This Eleven-headed Kannon shows traces of now-lost heads from around the topknot. While nearly its entire body was carved from a single block of wood, dried lacquer was used to create detail, demonstrating the use of techniques characteristic of the Nara and early-Heian period. It is also an important work as some of the original colors are still intact.

頭上面や天衣、光背や台座、また表面の彩色まで当初のものをのこす保存良好な作例。左脇腹に土を盛り上げて造る技法は、板製彩画のいわゆる板光背とともに、いかにも南都らしいものである。

This well-preserved Eleven-headed Kannon retains the majority of the original heads around its crown, as well as the ornamental cloth flowing away from the body, the mandorla, dais, and surface color. The technique of using clay to build up the midsection and the colorful painting on the panel mandorla represents a stylistic feature of Buddhist sculpture practiced in the Nara area.

親薬師寺に伝来した十一面観音像で、南都の平安仏に多い板光背（いたこうはい。木の板で造り、彩色する光背）を伴う。目を伏せた優しい表情、なで肩で華奢な体型、浅く穏やかな彫りの衣文などに、平安後期彫刻の典型的な特徴が認められる。

Originally from Shin'yakushi-ji Temple in Nara prefecture, this Eleven-headed Kannon was for a time placed as an attendant image to the main Yakushi nyorai sculpture. The extremely small head and the long, slender body give the sculpture its distinctive proportions. It is backed by a wood-panel mandorla, a type that was popular in Nara during the Heian period.

陝西省西安市宝慶寺伝来の石仏群の一つである。中尊の肩幅が広く胸を張った腰の細い体型や、脇侍の三屈法（トリバンガ）の姿勢は、インド風を消化した初唐期の様式を示すものである。

This is one of the stone buddha's from Baoqing-si Temple in Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, China. The central buddha has a deep chest, broad shoulders, and narrow hips. The "S"-shaped tribhanga stance of the side attendants exhibits the assimilated Indian style of the early Tang dynasty.

陝西省西安市宝慶寺伝来の石仏。肩幅が広く腰の細いプロポーションが特徴。右手に「滅罪」の二字が刻まれた印章を持つ。この印は十一面観音の現世利益的性格をより明確に表したものであろう。

This image of Eleven-Headed Guanyin carved from stone in high relief comes from Baoqingsi Temple in Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, China. It is notable in part for the proportions of its slender waist and broad shoulders. The right hand holds a stamp engraved with two characters (J. metsuzai; Ch. miezui) reading "extinguish sins," representing one of the many ways this bodhisattva fulfills the vow to rescue all sentient beings of this world.

薬師寺東院堂の南にある龍王社に神体として祀られていた。当初は単体の像ではなく、難陀龍王像（なんだりゅうおうぞう）の背後に絡みつく龍形（りゅうがた）として制作されたと見られる。大きく身をくねらせた迫真的な表現が魅力的。

This captivating statue with a large body that coils with a sense of power was enshrined as the Shinto form of the Ryuõsha Shrine deity to the south of the Toindo Hall at Yakushiji Temple in Nara. The statue is thought to have been produced not as an independent object of worship, but rather as a dragon form positioned to entwine an icon of the Dragon King Nandaryo from its reverse.
