天橋立駅から天橋立へ向かう道中で、必ずと言っていい程目にする寺院です。
堂々とした佇まいの山門は誰もが目を引きますが、寺の境内はそれ程大きくはなく、周遊するだけであれば1時間と要しません。境内には様々な建物や像・石碑があり、中には重要文化財に指定されているものもありますが、恐らく最も興味を引くのが、境内の松の木に吊るされている多数の小さな扇子でしょう。それらは全ておみくじで、扇子の形をしたおみくじというのもとても珍しいと思います。本尊には文殊菩薩が祀られていますが、秘仏とされており、定められた日にしか開帳されません。
文殊堂の中の一部にも、無料で、且つ靴を履いたまま立ち入ることが出来ます。文殊堂内にはいくつもの大きな絵馬が飾られており、それらのいくつかは14世紀に描かれたもので、古い歴史や当時の人々の願いを感じることが出来るでしょう。

Although the imposing gate is a sight to behold, the temple precincts are not that large, and it does not take more than an hour to walk in the temple. There are various buildings, statues, and monuments, some of which are designated important cultural properties, but perhaps the most interesting are the numerous small fans hanging from the pine trees on the temple grounds. All of them are omikuji, and it is very unusual to see omikuji in the shape of a fan. The main deity enshrined in the temple is Monju Bosatsu (Manjusri), which is considered to be a hidden Buddha and is only opened on designated days.
Visitors may enter parts of the main hall(Monju-do) free of charge and with shoes on. Inside the temple, there are a number of large ema (votive picture tablet) paintings, some of which date back to the 14th century, which give visitors a sense of the ancient history of the temple and the wishes of the people of that time.
