霊山白山登拝～泰澄大師の足跡を訪ねて(Mt.Hakusan~Traces of spiritual master Taicho)

１年に１回のヨーロッパ旅行があるから毎日頑張ってきたけれど、ゴールデンウィーク、シルバーウイーク、どちらも欠航、振り替えても政府の水際対策で日本帰国後14日自宅待機しなければならず、事実上、今年はコロナの影響でヨーロッパに行けない・・・。やむなく航空券は全額返金手続をお願いしました（涙）。
ならば、これまで行きたいと思っていて、行っていなかった「日本百名山」に行ってみようと決意！　
フランスのモンブランには行ったことがありましたが、日本の白山にはまだ行ったことがありませんでした。登った人がとてもいいよとおっしゃっていた、日本百名山、日本三大霊山、花の百名山として知られる白山を登拝しました。

I've been working hard every day because I have a trip to Europe that I take once a year. However, both of my flights during Golden Week and Silver Week were cancelled. Even if I had received new schedules, I would have had to self-isolate at home for 14 days after returning to Japan due to the government border control measures. In effect, I can't go to Europe this year because of the coronavirus... I reluctantly requested a full refund for my airline tickets (tears).
Indeed, I decided to finally visit the "100 Famous Mountains of Japan," a list of mountains I've always wanted to climb but never had the chance to!
Althoug I went up to Mont Blanc in France, I had never been to Mount Hakusan(Hakusan mens a white mountain in Japanese) in Japan. I chose to climb Mount Hakusan that is not only one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, but also one of Japan's Three Sacred Mountains and one of Japan's 100 Famous Flower Mountains. One of my friends had climbed it before and said it was wonderful.

関西から自動車で白山に向かいます。

昼食は、福井市内でおそばにしようと思い、何度か行ったことのある蕎麦屋さんに行くと、臨時休業の看板が。その蕎麦屋さんの近くにある蕎麦やすたけ様に入ることにしました。初めてのお店だったのですが、サクサクの天ぷらが美味でした。

福井大学や福井工大が近くにあるせいか若い人が多い印象です。雰囲気も明るくてとてもいいお店でした。

(Soba Yasutake)
I drove from the Kansai region to Hakusan.
For lunch, I planned to have soba noodles in Fukui city and went to a soba restaurant I'd been to several times before, but it was temporarily closed. So I decided to go to Soba Yasutake nearby. It was my first time there, but the crispy tempura was delicious.
Perhaps because of its proximity to Fukui University and Fukui Institute of Technology, the place attracts a lot of young people. The atmosphere is bright and cheerful ,a really nice place.

歴史探遊館から一の鳥居の間に、白山平泉寺を創建した泰澄大師の廟があります。廟をお参りして白山平泉寺の境内に入らせていただきます。

Between the Historical Exploration Museum and the first torii gate, you will find the tomb of Taichō Daishi, the founder of Hakusan Heisenji Temple. After paying my respects at the tomb, I entered the grounds of Hakusan Heisenji Temple.

平泉寺白山神社 寺・神社・教会

（白山平泉寺参道）
創建717年、歴史を感じます。

歴史のある神社仏閣ですが、若い人や家族連れが予想以上に多く訪れています。

白山信仰の中心地です。

(Approach to Hakusan Heisenji Temple)
Founded in 717, you can really feel the history here.
Although there are historical shrines and temples, there are younger visitors which was unexpected.
This area is the center of the Hakusan faith.

国史跡白山平泉寺旧境内 名所・史跡

（御前峰御本社）
御本社の右に別山社、左に越南知社が配せられ、白山山頂三山のそれぞれの神が祀られています。

・御前峰本社：伊弉冉尊（イザナミノミコト）
・別山社：天忍穂耳尊（アメノオシホミミノミコト）
・越南知社：大己貴尊（オオナムチノミコト）（大国主命）
が御祭神です。

御社に降り注ぐ光が輝いています。

(Gozenmine Main Shrine)
To the right of the main shrine is the Betsuzan Shrine, and to the left is the Etsunanchi Shrine, where the deities of the three peaks of Mount Hakusan are enshrined.

The light shining upon the shrine is brilliant.

国史跡白山平泉寺旧境内 名所・史跡

（三之宮・大楠公墓塔）
本殿から奥にもう少し進むと、三ノ宮と大楠公墓塔があります。

三ノ宮は安産の守護神との信仰が厚いお社です。私の長女が産まれたときにここを訪れた両親から白山平泉寺の安産守りをもらいました。結果、安産でしたので、霊験があったのだと気づきました。この三之宮の奥から越前禅定道がはじまります

楠木正成公の甥恵秀律師は、三之宮に参籠しているときに夢で楠木正成公の騎馬姿を見たと言います。その後、楠木正成公の湊川戦死を聞いて、三之宮で見た夢が楠木正成公が戦死したときに見たことに気づきます。そして、五重の石塔を立てて菩提を弔ったといいます。

恵秀律師の夢のエピソードは、テレパシー(telepathy)の典型例で、人間の気持ちが空間を超える一つの例証です。人間の見る夢の不思議さ、人間の心の大きさ・広さを思わずにはいられません。

(Sannomiya/Ōkusu Cemetery Tower)
A little further past the main shrine is the Sannomiya shrine and the tomb tower of Kusunoki Masashige.
Sannomiya is deeply revered as the guardian deity of safe childbirth. When my eldest daughter was born, my parents visited here and gave me a safe childbirth amulet from Hakusan Heisenji Temple. As a result, she was born safely, and I realized that it had worked. The Echizen Zenjodo trail begins from behind Sannomiya.
It is said that Kusunoki Masashige's nephew, the monk Eishu, had a dream in which he saw Kusunoki Masashige on horseback while staying at Sannomiya. Later, upon hearing of Kusunoki Masashige's death at Minatogawa, he realized that the dream he had at Sannomiya was the dream he had when Kusunoki Masashige died in battle. He then erected a five-tiered stone pagoda to pray for Masashige's soul.
This story of Master Keishu is a typical example of telepathy, a testament to how human emotions can transcend space. It makes one reflect on the mystery of dreams and the vastness and breadth of the human heart.

三之宮を後にしたときくらいからパラパラと雨が降ってきました。参道方面から鳥居に差し込む光が美しく輝いていました。

It started to rain lightly as I left Sannomiya. The light shining through the torii gate on the approach to the shrine was beautifully radiant.

車に乗り込んで、夕食を買い出しに道の駅恐竜渓谷かつやまへ。

運転中に前が見えなくなるくらいの強い降雨に遭いました。そのあとしばらくして天空に大きな虹が見えました。思わず車を道端に止めて虹の写真を撮りました。白山に歓迎されているのでは、という気持ちになりました。

I got into the car and headed to the Dinosaur Valley Katsuyama Roadside Station to buy dinner.
While driving, I encountered a heavy downpour that made it almost impossible to see. Shortly after, I saw a huge rainbow in the sky. I instinctively pulled over to the side of the road and took a picture of the rainbow. It felt as if Mount Hakusan was welcoming me.

車で白山国立公園へ。警備員の方が交代で夜を徹して警備してくださっています。

We drove to Hakusan National Park. Security guards are on duty throughout the night, taking turns to provide security.

１泊お世話になった永井旅館様です。

市之瀬駐車場にある日本秘湯を守る会会員の宿です。源泉かけ流しの湯舟と加水・循環の湯舟の二つがあります。源泉かけ流しの湯はぬるめで、ゆっくりと入ることができます。

お湯は宿の方もgoodとおっしゃるお墨付きです。熱い湯とぬるい湯を交互に入るとちょうどいいです。

(Ichinose Parking Lot / Nagai Ryokan)
This is Nagai Ryokan, where I stayed for one night.
This inn, located in the Ichinose parking lot, is a member of the Japan Association for the Preservation of Secret Hot Springs. It had two baths: one with free-flowing hot spring water and another with added and circulated water. The free-flowing hot spring water is lukewarm, allowing you to relax and soak for a long time.
The hot spring water is highly recommended by the inn staff. Alternating between hot and lukewarm baths is just right.

市之瀬ビジターセンターの前から市之瀬駐車場・別当出合間のシャトルバス（片道２０分・５００円）が待っています。時刻表によると5:00出発ですが、4:30くらいから５台ぐらいシャトルバスが待っていて、満員になり次第出発していきます。

私の乗った便は第２便で、4:40くらいに出発しました。

A shuttle bus (20 minutes one way, 500 yen) between Ichinose Parking Lot and Bettō Deai is waiting in front of the Ichinose Visitor Center. According to the timetable, buses start at 5:00, but there are about five shuttle buses waiting from around 4:30, and they depart as soon as they are full.
My bus was the second one of the day, and it departed around 4:40 AM.

往路は砂防新道、復路は観光新道を行く、もっともポピュラーなルートを選択しました。

入口には鳥居が建てられていて、ここから先は霊域であることを示しています。

人気のある登山コースで標識は要所要所に配置されていて、迷うことはほとんどないでしょう。

I chose the most popular route, taking the Sabo Shindo trail on the way there and the Kanko Shindo trail on the way back.
A torii gate stands at the entrance, indicating that the area beyond is a sacred site.
This is a popular hiking trail, and signs are placed at key points, so it’s unlikely to get lost.

中飯場で朝食休憩です。水の補給もすることができます。

永井旅館様で頼んでいた梅干し入りおむすびをいただきました。梅干しとたくあんに汗をかいた肉体が喜びます。大自然の中の朝食は、忘れられない食事になりました。

中飯場を過ぎたあたりから道の脇で咲く色とりどりの高山植物が目を楽しませてくれるようになります。今まで見たことのない植物ばかりでした。

華道の先生がかつて、花は人間が大好きで、声をかけてもらうととても嬉しい、とおっしゃっていたことを思い出します。

白山の高山植物の色の服があればとてもオシャレです。

大自然との一体感で気持ちが高まってきます。

I’m taking a breakfast break at the campsite. You can also refill your water bottles here.
I enjoyed the rice balls with pickled plums that I had ordered from Nagai Ryokan. My sweaty body rejoiced at the pickled plums and pickled radish. Breakfast in the midst of nature was an unforgettable meal.
From around the middle of the mountain pass, the colorful alpine plants blooming along the side of the road become a delight to the eye. They were all plants I had never seen before.
I remember my flower arrangement teacher once saying that flowers love people and are very happy when someone speaks to them.
Wearing clothes in the colors of the alpine plants of Mount Hakusan would be very stylish.
The feeling of oneness with nature is exhilarating.

弥陀ヶ原に出ると白山頂上が目の前に現れます。しばらく平地が続きます。一面緑です。

若い人が多く、小中学生も結構いました。

Upon reaching Midagahara, the summit of Mount Hakusan appears before you. A flat plain continues for a while, covered in green.
There were a lot of young people, and quite a few elementary and junior high school students as well.

室堂ビジターセンターのすぐ裏にあります。

ここで8/31まで御朱印をいただくことができます。

おみくじを引くと、小吉。しばらく忍耐の時期とのことでした。

I drew a fortune slip and got "Small Blessing." It said that I would need to be patient for a while.

白山比咩神社祈祷殿でいただいた御朱印です。コロナの影響で御朱印帳に直接書いてもらうのではなく、あらかじめ書いた御朱印を分けていただきます。

This is a goshuin (shrine stamp) I received at the prayer hall of Hakusan Hime Shrine. Due to the effects of COVID-19, instead of having the stamp written directly into my goshuin book, I received a pre-written stamp.

ついに白山奥宮に到着しました。

奥宮でもおみくじがあったので、白山比咩神社祈祷殿のおみくじのリベンジというわけではありませんが、もう一度おみくじを引きました。結果は、吉。そこそこいい運気が来ているとのこと。

祈祷殿と奥宮のおみくじを２で割ったのが結果かな、と勝手に解釈しました。

I finally arrived at the inner shrine of Mount Hakusan.
There were fortune slips available at the inner shrine as well, so although it wasn't exactly revenge for the fortune slip at the Shirayama Hime Shrine prayer hall, I drew another one. The result was good luck. It said that fairly good fortune was on my way.
I took it as an interpretation that the result was like averaging the fortune slips from the prayer hall and the inner shrine.

御前峰に到着、とても空が近い、そして青い！

そして、ここは、とても静かです。音は物と物の摩擦で発生しますが、空気が薄いため、その摩擦が少ないからではないかと思います。多くの修行者たちが山の中の瞑想で悟りを開いたのは、山の上の静かさが関係しているのかもしれません。

山頂からは周辺の日本アルプスの山々が見えて、素晴らしい眺めでした。

山頂付近になると気温が下がってきますが、簡単な長袖シャツがあれば十分、フリース類は全く不要でした。

We arrived at Gozenmine Peak, and the sky feels so close, and it's so blue!
And it's very quiet here. Sound is generated by friction between objects, and I think this is because the air is thin, resulting in less friction. Perhaps the quietness of the mountaintops is a factor in why so many ascetics attained enlightenment through meditation in the mountains.
From the summit, I could see the surrounding Japanese Alps, and the view was magnificent.
The temperature dropped near the summit, but a simple long-sleeved shirt is sufficient; fleece clothing was unnecessary.

頂上で３０分くらい滞在しているとキリが出てきました。山頂の天気の変化は早いです。

去りがたい気持ちもありつつ、山頂を後にします。

After staying at the summit for about 30 minutes, fog started to roll in. The weather at the mountaintop changes very quickly.
With a heavy heart, I left the mountaintop.

（黒ボコ岩・復路）10:40
復路は黒ボコ岩から観光新道を進みます。観光新道は、白山平泉寺の三之宮からはじまる越前禅定道の一部です。

観光新道は砂防新道より道が狭く、足場が不安定です。

On the return journey, I took the Kanko Shindo trail from Kuroboko-iwa. This trail is part of the Echizen Zenjodo trail, which begins at the Sannomiya shrine of Hakusan Heisenji Temple.
The Kanko Shindo (Tourist Road) is narrower and has more unstable footing than the Sabo Shindo (Erosion Control Road).

ここから見る山の尾根が馬のたてがみに見えます。それでこの名前がついたのでしょう。観光新道は砂防新道よりも道はよくないですが、高山植物が多く咲いています。

かつて禅僧たちもここを歩いたことに思いを馳せます。

高山植物の花で彩られた、静かな道を歩くだけで良質の瞑想ができている気がします。

The mountain ridge viewed from here resembles a horse's mane, which is likely how it got its name. The Kanko Shindo trail isn't as well-maintained as the Sabo Shindo trail, but it's home to many alpine plants.
I find myself reflecting on the time when Zen monks walked this path.
Just walking along the quiet path adorned with alpine flowers makes me feel like I'm having a good meditative experience.

殿ヶ池避難小屋にはトイレはありますが、水補給ができないので、室堂センターで水を補給しておくのがよいでしょう。

While there are toilets at the Tonogaike mountain hut, water cannot be refilled there, so it's best to stock up on water at the Murodo Center beforehand.

ここからずっと坂が続きます。

下り坂では石が靴の裏に強く押し付けられるため、足裏マッサージと同じ効果があり、神経系統を通じて内臓によい刺激になります。また、下り坂で不安定になる身体を全身で支えるため、体幹が鍛えられます。

It's a continuous uphill climb from here on.
When walking downhill, the stones are pressed firmly against the soles of your shoes, providing a similar effect to a foot massage and stimulating the internal organs through the nervous system. Furthermore, your core muscles are strengthened as you use your entire body to support your body as it becomes more unstable on a downhill slope.

（山崎旅館）
日本秘湯を守る会会員の宿、山崎旅館様へ移動します。白山スーパー林道からここまでの道は広くはないですが、スロースピードで対向車に気を付けて運転すれば大丈夫です。

スマホのアンテナが立っていなかったので、LTEは来ていないようです。それくらいの山奥です。

旅館の看板では、この温泉は野天温泉と書かれていました。露天とは、屋根がないという意味ですが、この温泉は、屋根がないどころではなく、森の中の温泉です。野天温泉という名称はこの温泉にぴったりな名称です。

加水・加温・循環一切なしの源泉かけ流しです。

満月の夜でしたが、夜の空に星が見えました。

この付近には建物らしい建物はこの旅館しかないので、夜に部屋の電気をつけていると虫が入ってきます。それもまた山の中ならではです。虫が苦手という人は日帰り温泉（\700-）で楽しむのが賢明かもしれません。

泰澄大師ゆかりの中宮温泉にしやま旅館様に行ってみたかったのですが、台風に伴うがけ崩れの影響で休館中で、訪れることができませんでした。

(Yamazaki Ryokan)
I headed to Yamazaki Ryokan, a member of the Japan Association for the Preservation of Hidden Hot Springs. The road from Hakusan Super Forest Road to here is narrow but manageable if you drive slowly and pay attention to oncoming traffic.
My phone's signal was low, with no LTE service, showing how deep in the mountains we are.
The sign at the inn described this hot spring as a "wild-air hot spring." While "wild-air" generally means without a roof, this hot spring is not just roofless; it's a hot spring in the middle of a forest. The name "wild-air hot spring" is perfectly suited to this hot spring.
This is a natural hot spring with no added water, heating, or circulation.
It was a full moon night, but I could see stars in the night sky.
Since this inn is almost the only building in this area, insects will get into your room if the lights were left on at night. That's just part of being in the mountains. If you don't like insects, it might be wiser to enjoy the day-trip hot springs (￥700-).
I wanted to visit Nishiyama Ryokan, a hot spring inn associated with Taicho Daishi, but it was closed due to a landslide caused by the typhoon, so I was unable to visit.

岩間温泉 秘湯の一軒宿 山崎旅館 宿・ホテル

山崎旅館から一乗谷朝倉氏遺跡へ移動します。

途中、道の駅瀬女で白山の地酒で有名な天狗舞・菊姫・手取川を購入して、お世話になっている人に贈ります。

We will travel from Yamazaki Ryokan to Ichijōdani Asakura Clan Ruins.
Along the way, I stopped at the Seme roadside station and bought some famous local sakes from Hakusan: Tengumai, Kikuhime, and Tedorigawa, to give as gifts to people who have helped me.

一乗谷朝倉氏遺跡(庭園) 名所・史跡

（一乗谷朝倉氏遺跡・復原町並）
当時の武家屋敷・町屋などの町並が再現されています。

中級武士の武家屋敷が再現されています。案内の方曰く、この地で見つかった刀が名古屋の熱田神宮の宝物館に保存されているとのこと。熱田神宮は草薙の剣に縁が深い神社なので、この遺跡から出た刀はすぐれた刀なのでしょう。

The townscape, including samurai residences and merchant houses from that era, has been recreated.
A samurai residence of a middle-ranking samurai has been recreated. According to the guide, a sword found on this site is preserved in the treasure hall of Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya. Atsuta Shrine is deeply associated with the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi (Grass-Cutting Sword), so the sword unearthed from this site must be a fine one.

一乗谷朝倉氏遺跡(庭園) 名所・史跡

朝倉氏の館の入り口にある唐門で、朝倉氏の美意識が感じられます。唐門の上部には朝倉の家紋と豊臣の家紋の二つが描かれています。

This is the Karamon gate at the entrance to the Asakura clan's residence, and it reflects the Asakura clan's aesthetic sensibilities. The upper part of the Karamon gate is decorated with both the Asakura family crest and the Toyotomi family crest.

唐門をくぐると第５代朝倉義景公が住んだ館の跡と義景公の墓所があります。

Passing through the Karamon gate, visitors reach the site of the residence where the 5th Asakura Yoshikage lived, as well as his tomb.

（渡岸寺）
滋賀県長浜市高月町にある渡岸寺へ。井上靖氏の『星と祭』でこの地の観音様が取り上げられていたこともあって、一度は行きたいと思っていた観音様です。

都で疫病がはやったことから、聖武天皇が泰澄大師に祈願を命じ、その際に泰澄大師が彫ったとされる国宝十一面観世音菩薩像が安置されています。保存のためだと思いますが、エアコンが設置されておらず、お堂で案内される方は暑くて大変です。

りりしい目元、引き締まった筋肉質な肉体、少し腰をひねった優美さ、右足を少し出してすぐに救いに行くぞという決意が印象的な観音様でした。

私がこれまで見てきた十一面観音菩薩像で一番優美な観音様です。

(Togan-ji Temple)
I went to Togan-ji Temple in Takatsuki-town, Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture. I had always wanted to visit this temple because the Kannon statue there was featured in Yasushi Inoue's novel "Stars and Festival."
When an epidemic broke out in the capital, Emperor Shomu ordered Taicho Daishi to offer prayers, and the national treasure Eleven-Headed Kannon Bodhisattva statue, said to have been carved by Taicho Daishi at that time, is enshrined here. I think it's for preservation purposes, but there is no air conditioning, so it is very hot for those being guided around the hall.
The Kannon statue was impressive with its dignified eyes, toned and muscular physique, graceful slight twist of the waist, and a determined look as if it were about to immediately go and save people in need, with its right foot slightly extended.
This is the most elegant statue of the Eleven-Headed Kannon Bodhisattva I have ever seen.

渡岸寺観音堂 寺・神社・教会
