Peter Paul Rubens
Flemish, Siegen 1577-1640 Antwerp
Venus and Adonis, probably mid-1630s
Oil on canvas
The subject is from Ovid's Metamorphoses (completed 8 A.D.). Accidently pricked by one of Cupid's arrows, Venus fell in love with the handsome hunter Adonis. Rubens shows their leave-taking?a popular subject also famously depicted by Titian in another picture now at The Met. With cavalier indifference to the goddess's charms and her warnings of danger, Adonis hunted a wild boar and was gored to death. Technical examination indicates that a later hand altered Adonis's expression to make it less foreboding. Gift of Harry Payne Bingham, 1937 (37.162) -

Spanish, Fuendetodos 1746-1828 Bordeaux
Josefa de Castilla Portugal y van Asbrock de Garcini (1775?about 1850) 1804
Oil on canvas
In this pendant to the portrait of her husband, Ignacio Garcini y Queralt, Donia Garcini is evidently pregnant, which may account for the informality of her hair and dress. Josefa's mother, whose name was Van Asbrock, was of Flemish descent. This may explain Goya's palette and his handling of paint in a manner reminiscent of portraits by Ruhens.

Georges de La Tour
French, Vic-sur-Seille 1593-1653 Luneville
The Fortune-Teller, probably 1630s
Oil on canvas
This celebrated painting, which was only discovered in the middle of the twentieth century, catches the moment when a wealthy young man, distracted by having his fortune told by an old gypsy woman, is robbed by her companions. The costume and composition may have been influenced by a theatrical scene, but such cautionary images, made popular by Caravaggio, were painted throughout Europe in the seventeenth century. Although scholars have debated whether the artist had seen Caravaggio’s work in Rome, the inscription in the right corner includes the name of the town where the artist lived in northern France. -

The Penitent Magdalen ca. 1640
Oil on canvas
A sinner, perhaps a courtesan, Mary Magdalen was a witness of Christ who renounced the pleasures of the flesh for a life of penance and contemplation. She is shown with a mirror, symbol of vanity; a skull, emblem of mortality; and a candle that probably stands for her spiritual enlightenment. The style of La Tour, a native of the duchy of Lorraine in eastern France, is much indebted to Caravaggesque painting. The contrast of candlelight and shadow, the pure geometry of form, and the meditative mood characterize the pictures for which he is famous.

Velizquez (Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velizquez)
Spanish, Seville 1599-1660 Madrid
The Supper at Emmaus 1622-23
Oil on canvas
This painting depicts the moment after the Resurrection when Jesus is recognized by two disciples as “he took bread, blessed and broke it, and handed it to them.” It may have been painted in Seville, where Velazquez first trained, or in Madrid, where he moved in 1623. The realism of the figures, the strong dramatic light, and the attention to still life details recall the work of Caravaggio, which Velazquez would have known in Seville through copies.
