フェルメールが５枚もあるメトロポリタン美術館。それが，展示場所がばらばらで。。。困ったものです（以前と展示場所が変わりました）。おまけに，係員がいい加減で，どこにフェルメールがあるかと聞いても，ウソばかり応えます。ここの係員はひどい。

The misbehavior of unsupervised maidservants was a common subject for seventeenth-century Dutch painters. Yet in his depiction of a young maid dozing next to a glass of wine, Vermeer transfigured an ordinary scene into an investigation of light, color, and texture that supersedes any moralizing lesson. While the toppled glass at left (now abraded with time) and rumpled table carpet may indicate a recently departed visitor, X-radiograph indicate that Vermeer chose to remove a male figure he had originally included standing in the doorway, heightening the painter’s ambiguity.

Standing at an open window, a woman begins her day with ablutions from a gilt-silver pitcher and basin, with linen coverings protecting her dress and hair. The first work by Vermeer to enter an American collection, this painting embodies the artist's interest in domestic themes, giving an almost voyeuristic glimpse into the private life of a woman before she presents her public face to the world.

Soft light illuminates the face of a young woman dressed in exotic clothing and costume jewelry. Like Vermeer's famous Girl with a Pearl Earring (ca.1665; Mauritshuis, The Hague), this painting was most likely not a commissioned portrait, but rather a so-called tronie, a portrayal of an intriguing individual, often in fanciful costume.

A young woman glances out a window while tuning her lute. Open songbooks and a viola da gamba on the floor indicate that she is preparing for a duet. Wealthy young people in the Dutch Republic studied music as part of their education, and amateur concerts provided a welcome opportunity for flirtation. The map of Europe in the background reflects the decoration of Dutch homes at the time, a sign of pride in the nation's preeminence in navigation and cartography.

This picture, made at a moment when public celebrations of the Mass were forbidden in the Dutch Republic, draws on the complex language of allegory to depict the triumph of the Catholic Church. A woman, representing the Church itself, places one foot atop a globe, while, in the foreground, the cornerstone of the Church crushes the serpent of evil. Vermeer converted to Catholicism before his marriage, and this painting, which includes a table laden with chalice, missal, and crucifix, may also refer to the celebration of the Mass in "hidden churches" within private homes. The Crucifixion scene in the background is based on a painting in Vermeer’s collection by the Flemish artist Jacob Jordaens.

  僭越ながら、この絵のMETの解説を読むと、
  https://www.metmuseum.org/ja/art/collection/search/437879
  「フェルメールが目指したのは肖像画ではなく」とあるところから「真珠の耳飾りの少女」の様に、これは「習作」なんだと捉えられているようでございます。「study」は通常「習作」といっているのではないかと思います。
  出過ぎた真似で、ご容赦。
