日本国内に4つある国立博物館の1つ。京都駅からのアクセスの場合、基本的にはバスなどの公共交通機関を使用するのが一般的であるが、京都駅から徒歩で20分程度の距離であるため、天気がいい日であれば散策気分で訪れてみるのもいいだろう。
敷地内に入るとすぐ目に飛び込んでくる建物として、明治時代に博物館が創立されてから現在に至るまで存在する、威風堂々たる赤レンガ造りの洋風建築である『明治古都館（旧本館）』と、直線的且つ幾何学的でスタイリッシュな建物である『平成知新館』の2つがある。南門から敷地内に入り東側には庭園があり、その庭園内には小さな茶室が設えられている。他にも敷地内にはいくつか建物があるが、常時公開・利用可能な建物は、展示を行っている『平成知新館』のみ。かつて展示室として使用されていた『明治古都館』は現在は立ち入ることが出来ず、不定期開催の期間限定の一般公開やロケーション撮影でしか利用することが出来ない。
京都には数多くの文化財を擁する社寺があること、また京都から1時間足らずでアクセス可能な奈良にも国立博物館があるからか、東京国立博物館を訪れたことがある人から見ると、展示の数は少ないと感じるかもしれない。それでも、展示を立ち止まらず周遊するだけでも2時間は要する。
ほとんどの展示品が、日本国内もしくは中国国内より発見・出土・購入・寄贈されたものである。陶磁器・金工・漆器・涅槃図・屏風絵・水墨画・書・仏像等、様々な文化財が展示されているが、どちらかと言えば美術的な要素が強く、考古学や文化的な繋がり・進化（あるいは深化）といった視点での展示要素は小さい。主に日本と中国における、それぞれの美術品の技術・技法・意匠を主軸とした展示が色濃い一方で、説明文を含め学術的な要素は薄い（そういった各展示の物やそれらの時代との関連性を強く出してしまうと、それで粗方事足りてしまい、京都内の社寺に足を運ばなくなってしまう恐れからの配慮だろうか？）。逆に言えば情報量を必要以上に盛り込まず純粋に展示物を鑑賞してほしい、という意図があるのかもしれない。
東京国立博物館と異なり、常設展示でも原則として全て撮影は禁止である。また、臨時休業する頻度が比較的高いため、訪れる際は事前にHP等で情報を集めた方がいい。

It's one of the four national museums in Japan. The museum is generally accessible from Kyoto Station by public transportation such as buses, but since it is only a 20-minute walk from Kyoto Station, it's a good place to visit on a nice day if you feel like taking a walk.
Two buildings immediately catch the eye upon entering the museum grounds: "Meiji Koto-Kan(former main exhibition hall)", a majestic red brick Western-style building that has existed since the museum was founded in the Meiji period, and the Heisei Chishin-Kan, a stylish, linear and geometric building. Entering the grounds from the south gate, visitors will find a garden on the east side, which houses a small teahouse. There are several other buildings on the grounds, but the Heisei Chishin-Kan is the only one that is open to the public at all times and is used for exhibitions. "Meiji Koto-Kan," is now inaccessible and can only be used for irregular, limited-time public openings and location shootings.
Perhaps because Kyoto has numerous temples and shrines with cultural assets, and Nara also has a national museum accessible in less than an hour from Kyoto, visitors who have visited the Tokyo National Museum may feel that the number of exhibits is small. Even so, it takes two hours just to walk around the exhibits without stopping.
Most of the exhibits were discovered, excavated, purchased, or donated from Japan or China. The exhibits include ceramics, metalwork, lacquerware, reclining screens, ink and wash paintings, calligraphy, Buddhist statues, etc., but they are more artistically oriented and are almost not displayed from the perspective of archaeology or cultural links or evolution (or deepening). While the exhibits are mainly focused on the techniques and designs of Japanese and Chinese works of art, there are few academic elements, including explanatory texts (this may be because if the exhibits are strongly related to each other and to the period in which they were exhibited, the visitors will be satisfied and will not visit the temples and shrines in Kyoto). Conversely, the museum's intention may be to allow visitors to appreciate the exhibits purely by not including more information than necessary.
Unlike the Tokyo National Museum, photography is basically prohibited in all permanent exhibits. In addition, since the museum is closed temporarily relatively frequently, it's advisable to gather information on its website in advance when visiting.
