東京・静岡・名古屋・京都・大阪の移動に最も欠かせない交通手段です。非常に多くの本数が運行され席数も多いにもかかわらず、遅延や運行中止がほとんど無く、飛行機に比べて気軽にチケットを購入し乗車できるのが特徴です。駅や車内の案内は日本語だけでなく英語・中国語・韓国語で表記されており、アテンダントも総じて英語で対応出来るため、初めて新幹線を利用する観光客も迷うことなく利用することが出来ます。最もお勧めしたい交通手段の一つです。
一方、昼夜問わず多くの観光客やビジネスマンが利用しているため、総じて自由席は確保しづらく、観光シーズンになると全ての車両の全ての予約席が予約されていることもあり、時間を決めずに移動したい観光客の悩みの種にもなっています。特に大人数での移動の場合、まとまった席は非常に確保しづらいです。確実に席を確保するのであれば、京都・大阪へ行く場合は東京駅から、東京へ行く場合は新大阪始発の新幹線を利用するといいでしょう。新大阪始発の新幹線は、有人のチケット売り場で必ず教えてくれます。
また、東北新幹線や上越新幹線と異なる点として、スーツケースなどの大きな手荷物を置く専用のスペースが無いことと、積雪に弱いところです。もしスーツケースがあるのであれば、車両の一番前か一番後ろの席を確保するのがお勧めです。冬季の東海道新幹線を使った移動は、降雪・積雪の情報を予め入手するといいかもしれません。
