"萩原朔太郎記念館"

「萩原朔太郎記念館」案内

萩原湖太郎（一八八六～一九四二）は、一八八六 （明治十九）年に前橋で生まれ、三十八歳までこの地で過ごしました。一九一七（大正六）年刊行の第一詩集『月に吠える」と、一九二三（大正十二）年刊行の詩集「青猫』によって日本近代詩史に不滅の金字塔を打ち立てました。

詩人の生家は、一九六八（昭和四十三）年まで前橋市千代田町二丁目にありました。往時の姿は左図に示したとおりですが、現在はポケットパークを残すのみとなっています。

生家の一部だった「土蔵」「離れ座敷」「書斎」を敷島公園ばら園内に移築復元し、一九八〇（昭和五十五）年より「萩原朔太郎記念館」として長く保存公開していましたが、敷島公園からこの地に移築し、二〇一七（平成二十九）年四月より同じく「萩原朔太郎記念館」として公開しています。

広瀬川を挟んで向かいに位置する前橋文学館の展示とともに、詩人の息遣いを感じ取っていただけたら幸いです。

Sakutaro Hagiwara Memorial House Guide

Sakutaro Hagiwara was born in Maebashi in 1886, and he spent his life here until he was 38 years old. The publishing of his first collection of poetry, "Tsuki Ni Hoeru," in 1917, and the publishing of "Ao Neko" in 1923 both established an immortal achievement in the history of modern Japanese poetry.

Originally, the house in which Sakutaro was born was located in 2-chöme, Chiyoda-machi, Maebashi City until 1968. The storehouse, separate house, and study that were all a part of the house he was born in were all moved and rebuilt in the rose garden in Shikishima Park (Maebashi City). From the year 1980, the Sakutaro Hagiwara Memorial House was open to the public for a very long time.

However, it was moved from Shikishima Park to the Hirose River riverside, and in April 2017 it was reopened to the public.

Those who would like to see the inside of the study and the inside of the separate house can do so if they go to the reception desk on the first floor of the Maebashi City Museum of Literature and ask the staff.

離れ座敷の前にある犬のオブジェは、前橋出身の岡作家、林麻依子さんによって制作（二〇二〇年）されました。

萩原朔太郎の第一詩集『月に吠える』を犬の形として作品化したもので、表面には詩織や序文から抜き出した言葉が刻まれています。北原白秋がこの詩集に寄せた序文から採り、「正しく君の悲しい心」と作品タイトルが付きました。

青春とは人生のある期間ではなく、心の持ちかたを言う。薔薇の面差し、紅の唇、しなやかな手足ではなく、たくましい意志、ゆたかな想像力、炎える情熱をさす。青春とは人生の深い泉の清新さをいう。

青春とは慶病さを退ける要気、安きにつく気持を振り捨てる冒険心を意味する。ときには、二〇歳の青年よりも六〇歳の人に青春がある。年を重ねただけで人は老いない。理想を失うとき初めて老いる。

歳月は皮膚にしわを増すが、熱情を失えば心はしほむ。苦悩・恐怖・実堂により気力は地に這い精神は芥になる。

六〇歳であろうと一六歳であろうと人の胸には、驚異に魅かれる心、おきな児のような未知への探究心、人生への興味の歓喜がある。君にも吾にも見えざる駅逓が心にある。人から神から美・希望・よろこび・男気・力の霊感を受ける限り君は若い。

霊感が絶え、神が皮肉の雪におおわれ、患数の氷にとぎされるとき、二〇歳であろうと人は老いる。頭を高く上げ希望の波をとらえる限り、八〇歳であろうと人は青春にして已む。

YOUTH

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of
rosy checks, red lips and supple knees; it is-a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over
timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self‐distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the
lure of wonder, the unfailing child‐like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of
cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.
