札幌・小樽・苫小牧・ニセコ等の都市や観光地に行く、あるいはそれらの都市や観光地から東京・名古屋・大阪などへ向かう際の拠点となる重要な空港である。北海道観光の重要な拠点と言われることがあるが、北海道は非常に広大であるため、必ずしもこの空港を利用することが最適解であるとは限らない。旭川・函館・釧路等、北海道内には他にも空港があり、東京や大阪等から行くことが出来る。北海道内で行く場所によって利用する空港を使い分けるといいだろう。
北海道内の空港では最も航空発着便数が多く、快速エアポート等の電車を利用すれば札幌駅から40分程度で空港に到着できるため、北海道内の空港の中で最も利便性が高い。一方で前述の通り北海道内には様々な空港があり、利用客の分散が見込まれるからか、重要都市をつなぐ空港としては（滑走路を除く）空港設備自体の大きさ・広さはやや小さい。通常時であれば保安検査等で待たされる機会は少ないが、コンサートなどのイベントが札幌市内で開催されると、空港内は大混雑となる。さらに冬季は滑走路が雪で覆われるため、ほとんどの便が欠航となる可能性も孕む。天候だけでなく、イベント開催の有無等も確認し、余裕をもって利用するといいだろう。
20時以降になると土産物店の多くが店じまいする。土産物を吟味しながら帰りの搭乗する便を待つのであれば、夕方までに空港に到着することをお勧めする。

Many souvenir stores close after 8:00 p.m. If you plan to wait for your return flight while shopping for souvenirs, it's recommended that you arrive at the airport before dusk.
