名残のルート６６、スタインベックの”怒りの葡萄”の前半

２０年代から３０年代、中西部、シカゴから西海岸、ロスまでの移動・輸送ルートは、ルート６６だった。その後、インター・ステーツ・ハイウエー、I-40が出来、旧道となり、新道のExitと町をつなぐローカルの道として、点々と残った。しかし現在それも、段々、面影が消えつつある。この旅行の部分は、比較的長く、旧道が残っており、回顧趣味のアメリカ人の観光ルートとなっている。

ラスベガスを拠点とする海外からの旅行者で、I-４０沿いの観光地、グランド・キャニオン、ペトリファイド・フォレストなど自分でドライブ旅行される向きには、フラッグスタッフにもルート６６が一部あるので、無理なく、回り道が出来る。
　
フェニックからラスベガスに、途中、プレスコットに1泊。翌朝、北上し、新道I-40の北側、ルート６６のAshforkの町を通り、すぐI-40に一旦入り、次のExit、Seligmanの手前で、長く続くルート６６に降りる。Seligmanの町の横道に入り、車を止め、通りを見て回る。車の中で、前夜、プレスコット・リゾートのディナーの残り、ドッギーバッグで昼食、一休み。

Peach Springs、Valentineなどの小さな村を通過し、Kingmansに入る。途中、鉄道の線路が近くに通っている部分が幾つかあり、長い貨物列車と並走、すれ違いのチャンスもある。


＊ルート６６とスタインベックの「怒りの葡萄」（１９３９年）

’３０年代の大恐慌(’２９年１０月、株式市場のCrashの後)とオクラホマ州など中西部、Great Plainsを襲ったダストボウル（１９３２年から１９３５年を過ぎても続いた砂嵐）の二重の災難を蒙った農民達は、土地を追われ、カルフォルニアの果樹園の求人チラシに誘われ、ルート６６の通るOklahoma City あたりに集まって、西に向う。１９３５年から１９４０年にかけて、中西部から百万にも達する人たちがカルフォニアに移動したとみられている。１９３２年の大統領選で、フーバーからルーズベルトに代わり、ニューディール政策で回復が図られたが、不況脱出には、１０年以上を要した。

この小説は、彼等の苦難の旅とカルフォルニアでの運命、そして、極限状態での人間の尊厳を、リリカルに表現したアメリカ文学の巨峰。単純にこれを社会小説の様に見る向きもあるが、PreacherのJohn Casyやジョード一家のトムは、出エジプト記のモーゼをイメージしたのではないかとの見方もある。宗教的ですらある叙事詩。

技法的には、ジョード一家を中心にオクラホマからカリフォルニアまで追っていく間、オペラのBackdrop、背景のように一般的な状況説明の章を入れ、重層構造にして厚みを付けている。

例えば、第５章は、ダスト・ボウルの不作と不況で借金が返せなくなり、土地を追われる小作人達の抱く素朴な疑問。次の原文が印象的。

"THE OWNERS OF THE land came onto the land, or more often a spokesman for the owners came. They came in closed cars, and they felt the dry earth with their fingers. ,,,,,,,,,,,,
At last the owner men drove into the dooryards and sat in the cars to talk out of the windows. The tenants men stood besides the cars for a while, and then squatted on their hams and found sticks with which to mark the dust. ,,,,,,,,,,
Some of the owner men were kind because they hated what they had to do, and some of them were angry because they hated to be cruel, and some of them were cold beause they had long ago found that one could not be an owner unless one were cold. And all of them were caught in something larger than themselves.

And now the squatting men stood up angrily.
Granpa took up the land, and he had to kill the Indians and drive them away. And Pa was born here, and he killed weeds and snakes. Then a bad year came and he had to borrow a little money. An' we was born here. There in the door --our children born here. And Pa had to borrow money. The bank owned the land then, but we stayed and we got a little bit of what we raised.
We know that--all that. It's not us It's the bank. A bank is'nt like a man. Or an owner of fifty thousand acres, he is'nt like a man either.

The tenant system won't work any more. One man on a tractor can take the place of twelve or fourteen families. Pay him a wage and take all the crop. We have to do it. We don't like to do it. But the monster is sick. Something happens to the monster.

第９章はさらに悲しい。小作人達は、彼らの生活そのものだった農機具など持って行けなくて、売れるものをすべて、二束三文で買い叩かれ、思い出の品も焼き捨てたり、置いて行くことになる。

"IN THE LITTLE HOUSES the tenant people sifted the belongings and the belongings of their fathers and of their grandfathers.

エリア ルート６６(アメリカ)

写真は、Seligmanの元散髪屋さん。ルート６６の保存に尽くしている。

「怒りの葡萄」の第１２章は、HIGHWAY 66 IS THE main migrant road. 66—-the long concrete path across the country, -------- from the Mississippi to Bakersfield-- で始まる。延々とルートの説明、地理の勉強になる。
Flagstaffの次は、もう、Ashfork　and Kingmanとなっている。

今は、ガソリン・ポンプも飾りだが。

第１５章のはじめ、ALONG 66 THE HAMBURGER stands---Al & Susy’s Place---
---. Two gasoline pumps in front, a screen door, a long bar, stools, and a footrail.

この章では、パンを求めるOkiesの別の家族に、コックと店番の女性が、ハンバーガやサンドウィッチの材料が無くなるので商売上困るのだが、分けてやる。そして、キャンディを欲しそうにする二人の子供に、父親が買ってやれるよう値段を安く偽る。店に来ていたトラック・ドライバーの二人連れは、一人、５０セントづづ置く。おつりを渡すという店番の女性に、てれかくしで、You　go to hell,といってさっさと立ち去る。ちょっとホッとする箇所。今でも、トラック・ドライバーは、心やさしい、男気のある連中が多い。
（ジョード一家のトムは、ルート６６の移動途中、カルフォルニアから舞い戻ってきた人に、Okieという言葉を教えられ、不安に駆られる。）

Kingmanの歴史的ホテル、Beale。

　クラーク・ゲーブルが結婚式を挙げたとか。ラスベガスでの結婚の様に、慌てて、隠れてやったのだろうか。
　もう、荒れ果てた様子だった。
　２００６年３月時点で、まだ、Yahoo Traveには、載っているが。

  こんにちは。
  
  私も､あわよくばルート６６を求めてと何度か訪れた事がありますが､田舎では､観光用としてか宣伝をしているところもあるようですね。
  私が行った中では､ニューメキシコ州ののかでもサンタフェなどが､その面影を残しているような気がいたしました。
  そこのVisitor Centerで貰ったCDにはRout66も含まれていました。
  
  でも､私は､車には乗れません。長大な貨物列車の側を通りすぎる､考えただけでも壮大な感じいたしますね。

  書き込み有難うございます。ニューメキシコのRt.66の古いところのまだ、残って
  いますか？以前、アルバカーキーとキャラップの間でも、I-40のEixtを何度も降り、町につながるRｔ．６６を走って見ました。廃墟のガスステーションに古いポンプが２本、本当に見つけ、感激しました。こんどのアリゾナ西端のRt.６６は、観光化していて、それほどの感動は、なかったです。勿論、地元も生活していかなければならず、致し方ないのかも。
