We researched this route on wikitravel where it warned tourists scam buses. These buses deliberately extend the time of the journey, by fake engine breakdown for example, so that the tourists arrive Siem Reap very late at night and most hotels/hostels are full/closed. We really took the sam bus and we waited in the middle of nowhere for many hours because of the failed engine. All the tourists in our bus are very clever and see their trick. We didn't argue with the bus driver at all. Instead we were very patient and became very united to share hostel information (because we all knew we not gonna get our planned hostels)! Even though it's a scam, a big drama, there's no danger and we made friends with other tourists- a French family and their baby, an Australian couple and a New Zealand university graduate. It was fun to feel the trusts between tourists (against the local drivers) in a foreign land!
