The name, Mihama-en(Japanese Garden) appears in the diary [Sarashina-Nikki]from Heian period.

Approach to the Garden

: As the visitor passes through the gate, which has a large copper-shingled roof, a stone walkway, lined on both sides with stone crafted walls, well-pruned bushes and bamboo fences, leads him into the garden and a series of changing scenic views are revealed in succesion before his eyes.

At the mouth of the Upper pond, the water coming from the waterfall is divided into two streams, one of which runs through the gorge and the other one, after passing through the Middle pond, flows into the Lower pond.

The Lower pond has an area of 2800 sq.m. and boasts a great variety of design, including an arbor, beach and islands. It is surrounded by artificial hills with winding paths and several roofed vantage points.

The authentic teahouse is built entirelyof japanese cedar brought from Kyoto's North Mountain. It is an elegant structure with a dark copper shingled roof done in the Dutch-lap method which representsa low gentle wave.
