名護市街地の東、市街地を流れる小川の岸辺にそそり立つガジュマルの巨木で、名護市のシンボルにもなっています。推定樹齢は300年を超えており、17世紀末の琉歌にも詠まれ、今も尚語り継がれています。
国の天然記念物であるため、登ることは出来ません。木を囲むように車道が敷かれていることもあり、みだりに近づくことをせず、程よい距離から眺めた方がいいでしょう。そんな状況でも、車道を挟んだ歩道側にも枝を伸ばしており、巨木としてのスケールを下から観察することが出来ます。

This is a massive banyan (gajumaru) tree towering over the eastern side of downtown Nago, along the banks of a small river that runs through the city. It's considered a symbol of Nago City.
The tree is estimated to be over 300 years old and was already mentioned in Ryūka poetry from the late 17th century, a legacy that continues to be passed down today.
As it's designated a National Natural Monument of Japan, climbing the tree is not permitted. Roadways run around the tree, so visitors should avoid approaching it too closely and instead admire it from a respectful distance. Even so, its branches extend over to the sidewalk across the road, allowing visitors to observe the impressive scale of this giant tree from below.
