かつて赤穂藩の藩主の住居、且つ藩政の舞台であった城址である。
現在は、当時の遺構や庭園を残しつつ、公園として整備されており、且つ無料であるため誰でも気軽に利用することが出来る。一方で、赤穂大石神社や周辺の博物館と異なり、城址内に目を引くような遺品や、像などの芸術品等が展示されているわけではない。一方で園内には多くの桜が植えられており、春には多くの花見客で訪れる。その他にもイベントが開催されている時期もあるが、それ以外は休日でもそれ程混雑した様子は見られず、気兼ねなくゆったりと散策するには丁度いいスポットかもしれない。公園として整備されているとはいえ、史跡である以上、立ち入りが厳しく制限されている箇所もある。
非常に広々とした公園ではあるが、一方で迷いやすい側面もある。特に堀に沿うように建てられている城壁や櫓は、どの方向から見ても往年の美しさを垣間見ることが出来るものの、悪く言えば特徴の無い見栄えが続き、方向感覚を失いやすい。今、自分がどこに居るのかの案内標識も少なく、特に小さい子供はしっかり手を繋ぐなどしないと迷子になりやすいと思う。

Today, the site is maintained as a park while retaining the remains and gardens of those days, and is free of charge, making it accessible to all. Unlike the Ako Oishi Shrine and other museums in the area, there are no eye-catching relics, statues, or other artifacts on display at the castle ruins. On the other hand, many cherry trees are planted in the park, which attracts many visitors in spring. Other events are held at certain times of the year, but otherwise the park does not appear to be crowded, even on holidays, making it a good spot for a leisurely stroll. Although the area is maintained as a park, as it's a historic site, access to some areas is strictly restricted.
Although the park is very spacious, it's also easy to get lost. In particular, the castle walls and turrets built along the moat, although you can catch a glimpse of the beauty of the past from any direction, are so featureless in appearance that it's easy to lose your sense of direction. There are few signs to tell you where you are, so it's easy to get lost, especially for small children, unless you hold hands with them.
