錦鯉について、その歴史と、現在の鑑賞用として世界に広く知れ渡るに至るまでの経緯・人々の努力の積み重ねの資料の数々が展示されている資料館である。現在錦鯉には様々な色の組み合わせや模様があるが、それらには全て名前と特徴が存在し、交配による分化の歴史、繁殖に使用される施設や注意点の紹介、高値を付けるための基準など、単に錦鯉の整体だけでなく幅広い情報を知ることが出来、非常に興味深い。
資料館としての規模はそれ程大きくはなく、展示されている全ての資料をじっくり観ても1時間程度で済む。日本語だけでなく英語や中国語の説明も併記されており、外国人観光客も気軽に訪れることが出来る。
屋内施設の中央に生簀が、屋外には池があり、悠々と泳いでいる錦鯉を見ることが出来る。これらは全て展示用として繁殖している。餌を与えることが出来るが、過剰な餌やりによる過度なストレスを与えないよう、いつでも出来る、というものではない。また餌やりが出来ない季節もあるため注意が必要である。屋外の池も転落防止の柵が無いため、庭を周遊する際は足元に充分注意が必要である。

This museum exhibits the history of Nishikigoi, how they came to be widely known around the world as an ornamental species, and the many materials on the efforts of people who have made them. It is very interesting to learn not only about the bodywork of Nishikigoi but also a wide range of information, such as the history of differentiation by mating, the facilities used for breeding and precautions taken, and the standards for obtaining a high price.
The museum is not so large in scale that it takes only about an hour to take a good look at all the exhibited materials. The explanations are provided not only in Japanese but also in English and Chinese, making it easy for foreign tourists to visit.
There is a fish tank in the center of the indoor facility and a pond outside, where visitors can see Nishikigoi swimming in comfort. All of them are bred for display purposes. You can feed them, but not at any time, so as not to cause excessive stress by overfeeding. Also, there are seasons when feeding is not allowed, so care should be taken. The outdoor pond is not fenced off to prevent visitors from falling in, so visitors need to watch their step when walking around the garden.
