現在の寺院の名称である『瑞巌寺』になるより前の時代から受け継がれてきた宝物を含む、瑞巌寺に伝わる様々な文化財が展示されている博物館。仏像や涅槃図、書簡等をはじめ、重要文化財に指定されている宝物も数多く展示されている。本堂や庫裡の拝観料で利用できるため、是非とも訪れておきたい。
文化財保護のため、基本的に全ての展示物は撮影禁止で、また館内の証明は暗めに設定されている。特に階段での昇降は要注意。昇降用のエレベーターがあるため、車椅子等の障碍を持つ方でも気軽に利用できる。
比較的コンパクトな建物の外観とは裏腹に、展示物の数は多い。しっかりと観覧すれば1時間以上かかるだろう。この寺院ならでは、あるいは伊達家との関連を示す展示物がほとんどであるため、東北を代表する古刹とは言え、日本全体の歴史的な事象や人物との関係を示す展示はあまり期待しない方がいい。またほとんどの展示物の説明書きが日本語のみであるため、海外から観光客としてはやや退屈に思うかもしれない。

The museum exhibits various cultural assets of Zuigan-ji Temple, including treasures that have been handed down since before the temple was named "Zuigan-ji Temple," which is its current name. The museum exhibits many treasures designated as important cultural properties, including Buddhist statues, a reclining image of Buddha, and letters. The museum is open to visitors with the admission fee to the main hall and the kori (temple treasury), so it is definitely worth a visit.
For the protection of cultural properties, photography is basically prohibited for all exhibits, and the lighting in the museum is dark. Be especially careful when ascending and descending the stairs. The museum has an elevator for going up and down, which can be easily used by people with disabilities such as wheelchairs.
Despite the relatively compact exterior of the building, there are many exhibits. A thorough visit would take more than an hour. Most of the exhibits are unique to this temple or related to the Date family, so visitors should not expect to see exhibits that relate to historical events or people in Japan as a whole, even though this is an ancient temple representing the Tohoku region. In addition, most of the exhibits are written only in Japanese, which may be a bit tedious for foreign visitors.
