言わずと知れた福知山市のシンボルです。
城の縄張りは明智光秀によって定められましたが、城郭は江戸時代に入ってからのものです。廃藩置県による廃城で縄張りも縮小され、昭和後期に発掘調査・天守の復元・福知山城公園としての整備が行われました。名古屋城や大阪城、熊本城のように、威風堂々とした雰囲気はありませんが、市民を静かに穏やかに見守るような、そんな佇まいを感じます。
現在、天守は郷土資料館となっていますが、その多くが江戸時代以降の福知山藩としての史料で占められ、明智光秀に関する資料はあまり多くありません。期待しすぎるとガッカリするかもしれません。天守までは（場所により傾斜が急であるものの）坂道になっているため車椅子等の障碍を持つ方でもそれ程難なく行くことが出来ますが、天守内は基本的に階段であるため、利用しづらいと感じるでしょう。

The territory of the castle was defined by Mitsuhide Akechi, but the castle tower and other structures were completed in the Edo period. Although it was abandoned in Meiji era, in the late Showa era, the castle was excavated, the castle tower was restored, and the area was transformed into Fukuchiyama Castle Park. Although it does not have the majestic atmosphere of Nagoya Castle, Osaka Castle, or Kumamoto Castle, it has the appearance of quietly and peacefully watching over the citizens.
Today, the castle tower is used as a local museum, but most of the materials are from the Fukuchiyama clan since the Edo period, and there are not many materials related to Mitsuhide Akechi. If you expect too much, you may be disappointed. The path up to the castle tower is sloping (although the slope is steep in some places), so people with disabilities such as wheelchairs can get there without much difficulty, but they may find it difficult to use the stairs inside the tower castle.
