庄内地方を代表する山の一つ。登山可能なシーズンは夏の数か月しかなく、それ以外は分厚い雪に閉ざされるが、それでも毎年のように登山客が絶えない。地表がうだるような真夏の暑さでも、山頂の涼しさは、下界の暑さを忘れさせてくれるだろう。
夏季は、八合目の駐車場まで車もしくはバスで行くことが出来る。そこから少し歩いたところにペアリフトが設置されている。ペアリフト上駅から山頂への山道は2時間程度であり、山頂の山小屋で一泊しなくても、行程次第で日帰りで登ることが出来る。ただ、山頂から臨む朝日・夕焼け、それに照らされる遠方に佇む鳥海山の姿は、この世のものとは思えない絶景だ。その景色を臨むのであれば、是非とも山頂の山小屋で一泊することをお勧めしたい。
しかし、月山の山頂はかなりの確率で雲が立ち込めているため、朝日や夕焼けを見るのは容易ではない。こればかりは運を天に任せるしかない。もし見ることが出来たなら、それはこの上ない幸運に恵まれていると言うべきだろう。

Mt.Gassan is one of the mountains representing the Shonai region in Yamagata. Generally you can climb it only a few months in the summer, in other seasons, it is closed by thick snow. If you climb the mountaintop, you can feel the magnificent nature of the mountain and may be released from the unpalatable heat of the lower world.
In the summer, you can go to the parking area at eighth station of the mountain by car or bus(For other seasons, you can not be used it basically). There is a lift station in the place you walk a little from the parking. It is approximately 2 hours from the terminal station of the lift to the mountaintop. Depending on your journey, you can go to the mountaintop on a day trip. Still I recommend you to stay overnight in a mountain hut at the mountaintop. Because the scenery of Mt.Chokai seen from the mountaintop, the scenery of sunrise, and the scenery of sunset are as the heaven!
However, the possibility that the mountaintop of Mt.Gassan is covered with thick clouds is quite high. If you can see the magnificent scenery of sunrise or sunset, you should be said to be the owner of good luck.
