山口西部の温泉・神社の旅~A trip to hot springs and shrines in western Yamaguchi

年末に、急遽２月の３連休にどこか国内旅行をしたいと思いましたが、沖縄や九州のメジャーどころは予約がいっぱいでした。

そこで、１．訪れたことの少ない都道府県で、２．雪に悩まされない、３．１か月前でも宿泊の空きがある、という条件で、山口県を選択しました。

新山口を起点にレンタカーを使った、２泊３日山口県西部周遊の旅です。積極的に行こうと思って選んだわけではない山口でしたが、質のよい温泉、フォトジェニックな風景、新鮮な海の幸、想像していた以上によかった！です。

１月末ごろに幼稚園に通う子どもからもらったインフルエンザで寝込んでいたので、とてもよいリハビリ旅にもなりました。

At the end of the year, I suddenly decided to take a domestic trip somewhere during the three-day weekend in February, but popular destinations like Okinawa and Kyushu were fully booked.
Therefore, I chose Yamaguchi Prefecture based on the following conditions:
1. It is a prefecture I have rarely visited
2. It is not affected by snow
3. There are still accommodation vacancies even a month in advance.
This was a 2-night, 3-day trip around western Yamaguchi Prefecture, starting from Shin-Yamaguchi station. I rented a car to explore the area. I didn't actively choose Yamaguchi as my destination, but the high-quality hot springs, photogenic scenery, and fresh seafood exceeded my expectations.
I had recently caught the flu from my child, who attends kindergarten around the end of January, so this trip was a great way to recover.

新大阪9時48分発・新山口11時47分着のぞみで新山口へ移動し、駅前でレンタカーを借り受け、新山口を12時過ぎに出発です。

防府一宮玉祖神社に向かう前に、腹ごしらえに玉祖神社に一番近い道の駅へ。道の駅は、港の隣にあり、新鮮な海の幸が期待できそうです。

I took the Nozomi Shinkansen Express departing Shin-Osaka at 9:48 AM and arriving at Shin-Yamaguchi at 11:47 AM. After picking up the rental car near the station, I departed Shin-Yamaguchi a little after 12:00 PM.
Before heading to Hofu Ichinomiya Tamanooya Shrine, we stopped at the roadside station closest to the shrine to grab a bite to eat. The roadside station is next to the port, so we could expect to find some fresh seafood.

訪れた時間が遅めだったので、日替わりは売り切れでした。何となく、お寿司を頼みました。

This is a restaurant located inside a roadside rest area.
Since I arrived rather late, the daily special was sold out. I ordered sushi instead.

２時半頃に防府国一宮玉祖神社に到着です。初めて訪れる神社です。

Our first destination was Tamanooya Shrine, the Ichinomiya (first-ranked shrine) of Hofu Province, around 2:30 PM. This was my first visit to this shrine.

神社の敷地内にある鶏舎には、天然記念物の日本鶏黒柏がいます。

玉祖神社から高速道路を経由して、国道316号沿いの道の駅於福に併設された於福温泉へ。

泉質は、アルカリ単純温泉で、すべての浴槽が毎分1.5トンの豊富な湯量を利用した源泉かけ流しです。

25.4℃の源泉を加熱して、42.0℃のお湯になっています。25.4℃の源泉も浴槽に入れられていて、かなり冷たいですが、源泉そのものを体験できます。熱い湯と交互に入ると肌が引き締まります。入浴料金は、大人一人500円です。

道の駅於福から一の俣温泉に移動し、宿泊です。午後６時頃一の俣温泉に到着です。

From Tamanooya Shrine, we took the expressway to Ofuku Onsen, which is located next to the Ofuku roadside station along National Route 316.
The hot spring water is alkaline simple, and all baths use a free-flowing spring with abundant water at a volume of 1.5 tons per minute.
The hot spring waterbtemperature is naturally 25.4℃ but is heated to 42.0℃ for bathing. The 25.4℃ spring water is also added to the bath, and although it's quite cold, you can experience the spring water itself. Alternating between the hot and cold baths will tighten your skin. The bathing fee was 500 yen per adult.
We then traveled from the Ofuku roadside station to Ichinomata Onsen for our overnight stay. We arrived at Ichinomata Onsen around 6 PM.

一の俣温泉から俵山温泉へ移動します。

We traveled from Ichinomata Onsen to Tawarayama Onsen.

一の俣温泉から俵山温泉への道は結構な山道です。子どもがかなり嫌がって車内で騒ぐので、大変でした。

温泉街は昭和レトロです。

The road from Ichinomata Onsen to Tawarayama Onsen was quite mountainous. It was difficult because the kid was very unhappy and made a fuss in the car.
The hot spring town has a Showa-era retro atmosphere.

俵山温泉について簡単に説明している道の看板です。

This is a road sign that provides a brief explanation of Tawarayama Onsen.

俵山温泉「町の湯」です。常連と思しき高齢者が浴槽でずらっと並んでいて、浴槽に入るのにやや気後れしますが、子どもが「浴槽に入りたい。」と言ったのに気を使ってくださったのか、空けてくれました。

毎日湯を入れ替えるこだわりの温泉です。一切加水していないかけ流しのハイクオリティな温泉でした。

私の持っている全国の温泉100選の本には選ばれていませんが、温泉教授と言われる松田教授の作った全国平成温泉番付では西の横綱に選ばれていて、自然治癒力の向上を期待できるとされています。温泉街の街並みや知名度などではなく、本当に温泉の質を重視する人なら、外せない温泉です。

源泉を飲むことができ、内臓によい効果があるとされています。

自宅に帰ってからしばらくしても体調はいつもよりよいです。複数の温泉に入ったので、どの温泉の効果かを特定はできませんが、俵山温泉の効果があったのだと思います。

料金は大人一人430円です。

This is the "Public Bath" at Tawarayama Onsen. There was a long line of elderly regulars, which made me a little hesitant to get in, but when my child said, "I want to get in the bath," they kindly made room for us.
This is a hot spring that is carefully maintained and changes the hot water every day. It was a high-quality hot spring with no added water, just free-flowing hot spring water.
Although it's not listed in “100 best hot springs across Japan” in my bookshelf, it's ranked as the "Western Yokozuna" (grand champion) in the Heisei Era National Hot Spring Ranking compiled by Professor Matsuda, known as the "Hot Spring Professor," and is said to enhance the body's natural healing abilities. For those who truly value the quality of the hot springs rather than the townscape or fame, this is a must-visit.
The spring water is drinkable and is said to have beneficial effects on internal organs.
Even after returning home, I still felt better than usual. I visited several hot springs, so I can't pinpoint which one is responsible, but I think it was Tawarayama Onsen that had an effect.
The fare is 430 yen per adult.

俵山温泉から国定公園に指定されている千畳敷へ向かいます。

広い駐車場がある割には自動車はあまり止まっていませんでした。

We headed from Tawarayama Onsen to Senjojiki, which is designated as a National Park.
Despite ample parking, there weren't many cars parked there.

千畳敷(山口県長門市) 自然・景勝地

千畳敷から竜宮の潮吹き・元ノ隅稲成神社へ移動します。

元ノ隅稲成神社には、１００台以上の駐車場が用意されていますが、駐車場待ちに４０分強かかりました。千畳敷にはそれほどたくさんの観光客はいなかったので、こんなにたくさんの観光客が集まっていることにビックリしました。

We moved from Senjojiki to Ryugu-no-Shiofuki and Motonosumi Inari Shrine.
Motonosumi Inari Shrine has parking for over 100 cars, but we still had to wait over 40 minutes due to many turists. There weren't that many tourists at Senjojiki, so I was surprised to see so many people gathered there.

とてもインスタ映えするSNS世代に人気のスポットです。元ノ隅稲成神社は、アメリカCNNの「31の日本の美しい風景」の一つに選ばれています。

水平線と連なる赤い鳥居がとてもフォトジェニックで、たくさんの人、特に若い世代が来ていました。1955年に白狐のお告げで創建されたそうです。自宅近くに戦後に白蛇の夢を見た人が建てたお社がありますが、たくさんの観光客が押し寄せるような現象はありません。インスタ映えしなければ、こんなに人が来ることはないでしょう。インターネットの世界が現実の世界を変化させている、象徴的な場所だと感じました。

若い人に来てもらうためには、内容よりもインスタ映えが大事！です。

鳥居の上に設置されたお賽銭箱にお金を入れることができれば、願いが叶うと言われています。面白い仕掛けがなされています。

The red torii gates stretching along the horizon were incredibly photogenic, attracting many people, especially younger generations. It was apparently founded in 1955 following a divine revelation from a white fox. Near my home, there's a shrine built after the war by someone who had a dream about a white snake, but it doesn't attract the same level of tourist flocks. If it weren't so Instagrammable, it wouldn't be crowded like this. I felt it symbolizes how the internet is changing the real world.
To attract young people, Instagram-worthy content often matters more than the actual content.
It is said that if you can put money into the offering box placed atop the torii gate, your wish will come true. It's an interesting mechanism.

The Sea of ??Japan is right in front of the torii gate, and the ocean is right there. Fine spray of water drifts in on the wind.

元ノ隅稲成神社で昼食にしようかと思ったのですが、１時過ぎにすでに食堂は営業時間外になっていました。次の目的地の道の駅北浦街道豊北でちょっと遅い昼食をとることにしました。

I had planned to have lunch at Motonosumi Inari Shrine, but the restaurant was already closed at 1 PM. So I opted for a late lunch at my next destination, the Kitaura Kaido Houhoku roadside station.

２時過ぎに道の駅北浦街道豊北に到着です。
この道の駅は、全国の道の駅ランキングで２回栄えある１位に輝いている、道の駅の王様です。豊北のゆるキャラはホックンで、こちらはあまり知られていません。

遅い昼食をいただきます。

We arrived at the Kitaura Kaido Houhoku roadside station a little after 2 PM.
This roadside station is the king of roadside stations, having twice been ranked number one in the national roadside station rankings. The local mascot for Houhoku is Hokkun, who is not very well known.
I'm going to have a late lunch.

イカ丼を選択しました。昼食時としては遅いですが、券売機の前には行列ができていて、空腹を我慢して、３０分くらい待ちました。

人気の海鮮丼、刺身定食は完売でした。この辺はウニが有名みたいです。

I chose the squid rice bowl. Despite the late hour, there was a line in front of the ticket machine, so I endured my hunger and waited for about 30 minutes.
The popular seafood rice bowls and sashimi set meals were sold out. Apparently, sea urchins are famous around here.

道の駅 北浦街道 豊北 道の駅

道の駅から角島に向かいます。本州と角島を結ぶ角島大橋は、自動車のテレビCMや映画撮影で使われたこともある有名な場所です。

奈良の平城京で角島の海産物の木簡が発掘されていて、奈良時代から角島と近畿が繋がっていたことがわかります。

We headed to Tsunoshima from the roadside station. The Tsunoshima Bridge, which has been connected to the mainland, is a famous location that has been used in car TV commercials and movie shoots.
Wooden tablets containing information about marine products from Tsunoshima Island have been unearthed in Heijo-kyo, Nara, indicating that Tsunoshima Island and the Kinki region were connected from the Nara period onward.

角島大橋 名所・史跡

角島小学校の校庭の隅に建つ万葉記念碑です。万葉集の最後の方の東歌で角島のことを歌う歌が刻まれています。万葉集はちょっとかじったことがありますが、角島の歌があることは全然知りませんでした。

This is a monument on The Manyoshu located in the corner of the Tsunoshima Elementary School grounds. It bears an inscription of a poem about Tsunoshima from the later section of The Manyoshu, specifically from the Azumauta (Eastern Songs) collection. I dabbled in the Manyoshu a little, but I had no idea there was a poem about Tsunoshima.

角島 自然・景勝地

角島から福徳稲荷神社へ向かいます。途中の道沿いの美しい海が印象的でした。

鳥居まではかなり急こう配です。

We headed from Tsunoshima to Fukutoku Inari Shrine. The scenic drive along the coast was very impressive.
The slope leading up to the torii gate is quite steep.

夕日が海を照らす美しい風景です。

福徳稲荷神社には千本稲荷と名付けられた鳥居が並んでいます。20分くらい歩いたところからきれいな海を見ることができます。

It's a beautiful scene with the setting sun illuminating the sea.
Fukutoku Inari Shrine has a row of torii gates called Senbon Inari (Thousand Inari). You can see a beautiful ocean view from about a 20-minute walk away.

元ノ隅稲成神社に負けないくらいフォトジェニックな風景です。

This scenery is just as photogenic as that of Motonosumi Inari Shrine.

宿泊先である川棚温泉へ向かいます。

宿泊した寿旅館はかなり年季の入った建物ですが、温泉は9月から5月まで加温していますが、加水しないかけ流しで質のよい温泉でした。

川棚温泉には東京オリンピックの新国立競技場の設計で有名な隈研吾氏が設計した「川棚の社」という交流センターがあります。2012年に日本建築学会から賞が贈られた優れた設計です。

センターの中には川棚温泉に滞在したアルフレッド・コルトーの名を冠した「コルトー・ホール」があり、実力のある演奏家のコンサートが開かれています。

川棚温泉は、美しい海・音楽・温泉と私の大好きなものが揃っています。子どもが独立したら、川棚温泉に移住してもいいと思うくらいです。

We were now heading to Kawatana Onsen, where we stayed overnight.
The Kotobuki Ryokan where I stayed was somewhat old, but the hot spring water, although heated from September to May, was free-flowing and not diluted, making it a high-quality hot spring.
Kawatana Onsen is home to a community center called "Kawatana no Mori," designed by Kengo Kuma, famous for designing the new National Stadium for the Tokyo Olympics. It won an award from the Architectural Institute of Japan in 2012.
Inside the center is the "Cortot Hall," named after Alfred Cortot, who stayed at Kawatana Onsen, where concerts by talented musicians are held.
Kawatana Onsen has all the things I love: beautiful ocean views, music, and hot springs. I'm even thinking of moving there once my children are grown up and independent.

川棚温泉から長門国一宮住吉神社を訪問し、赤間神宮へ。

住吉神社では、小雨が降る中、建国記念日（紀元祭）の式典が執り行われていました。

From Kawatana Onsen, we visited Sumiyoshi Shrine, the Ichinomiya (first-ranked shrine) of Nagato Province, and then went to Akama Shrine.
At Sumiyoshi Shrine, a ceremony for National Foundation Day (Kigensai) was being held amidst a light rain.

赤間神宮には、耳成芳一の像や安徳天皇陵があります。

下関は、壇ノ浦、日清講和条約の舞台です。遠い昔に受けた日本史の授業のことをかすかに思い出しました。

Akama Shrine houses a statue of Miminashi Houichi and the tomb of Emperor Antoku.
Shimonoseki is the site of the Battle of Dan-no-ura and the Treaty of Shimonoseki, reminding me of a Japanese history class I took a long ago.

唐戸市場の２階にある「海転からと市場」でちょっと早めの昼食です。

今まで知っている回転ずしの中で一番美味でした。私の知る限り日本一上手い回転ずしです。ということは、私の知る限り世界一上手い回転ずしになりますね。

520円の大トロが口の中で溶けて、とっても美味しかったです。

メロンといったデザートもあるので、子どもが入っても退屈しません。

We had an early lunch at "Kaiten Karato Market," located on the second floor of Karato Market.
This was the best conveyor belt sushi I've ever had. As far as I know, it's the best conveyor belt sushi in Japan. Which means, as far as I know, it's the best conveyor belt sushi in the world.
The fatty tuna, which cost 520 yen, melted in my mouth and was incredibly delicious.
They also have desserts like melon, so children won't get bored.

This is the former Akita Shokai Building, a retro building designated as a Japan Heritage site.

下関から長府に向かいます。

横枕小路の近くに乃木大将ゆかりの乃木神社があります。

We were heading from Shimonoseki to Chofu.
Near Yokomakura Alley is Nogi Shrine, which is associated with General Nogi.

古江小路は江戸時代の雰囲気が残っています。

高杉晋作が挙兵した功山寺が近くにあります。

Furue-koji retains the atmosphere of the Edo period.
Kōzanji Temple, where Takasugi Shinsaku raised his army, is located nearby.

長府から高速道路で山口市へ移動します。山口大神宮を訪れたあと、瑠璃光寺に向かいます。

西のお伊勢さんともいわれる山口大神宮は山口市中心部にありますが、伊勢神宮の内宮・滝原宮を思い出させる、清らかな空間です。市街地にこれだけの清浄な場所があるのは、素敵なことです。

国宝の五重塔は瑠璃光寺の公園内にあり、無料で誰でも見ることができます。

寺の敷地内の梅の花が咲き始めていて、春の訪れを感じます。

山口市から新山口まで移動して、17時46分新山口発のぞみで帰宅の途につきます。

新山口駅で民芸品を売っている店で商品を買うとおまけでくれる占いに、私が「頭の良すぎる変わりもの、学者肌」と書かれてあり、不服があるものの、家族から当たりすぎるほど当たっていると大笑いされ、占いの内容をしぶしぶ受け入れました。

We traveled from Chofu to Yamaguchi City via the expressway. After visiting Yamaguchi Grand Shrine, we headed to Rurikoji Temple.

Yamaguchi Grand Shrine, sometimes called the "Ise Shrine of the West," is located in the heart of Yamaguchi City, yet it is a pure and serene space reminiscent of the Inner Shrine ,Takihara-no-miya, of Ise Grand Shrine. It's wonderful to find such a pristine place in the middle of a city.
The five-story pagoda, a National Treasure, is located within the park of Rurikoji Temple and can be viewed by anyone free of charge.
The plum blossoms on the temple grounds began to bloom signaling the arrival of spring.
I traveled from Yamaguchi City to Shin-Yamaguchi and then took the Nozomi Shinkansen Express departing Shin-Yamaguchi at 5:46 PM to head home.
When I bought a folk craft item at a shop in Shin-Yamaguchi Station, they gave me a fortune slip as a bonus that describe me as "an eccentric person with an overly intelligent mind, a scholarly type," which I didn't like, but my family laughed at how spot-on it was, so I reluctantly accepted the fortune slip's contents.
