美術館から、ツエントロに戻ってきました。

細い道を登っていきます。
Santuario Montalto. 聖地モンタルト，とでも言うのでしょうか。
ここが裏口。あとで正門がわかりました。

つきました。モンタルトの丘です。

いい景色。

メッシーナの街がよく見えます。

Shrine of Our Lady of Montalto

Fascinatintg and miraculous events charaeterize the history qf the Shrine, a symbol of the special affection of the people of Messina to the Marian cult.
If, in 1282, the appearance ofthe White Lady on the hill of Caperrina assured the support invoked during the Angevin siege, at the time of the Sicilian Vespers,
the fight of the white dove, recalled in the third stage of the Bell Tower in Piazza Duomo, pointed to the Friar hermit Nicholas the perimeter of the church,
that was to be built, already dedicated to St, Mary of Alto.

And it is still possible to see, after careful restoration, the table of expected Byzantine workmanship that, accoding to the tradition, came by sea from the East and was enthroned in 1300,
also the marble Madonna della Vittoria comissioned by the Senate to Ahdrea Calamecca in the sixteenth century, to commemorate the victory of Lepanto, in 1930 moved above the facade, and many wonders and waving episodes,
some of which are narrated in the five centered paintings (1636) still in the church, are told by sources.

Constance of Hauteville set the foundation stone of the original nucleus of the church which was consecrated in the same 1295.
In 1389 and untill the confiscation, caused by the revolutionary laws of 1866, in the adjacent monastery were allocated the Cistercian nuns, It is due to their generosity, as evidenced by the plaques inside the building,
the endowment of still enjoyable works to the church like the wooden Christ Crucified dating between '400 and '500, the beautiful seventeenth century silver manta by Pietro Juvara,
the sculpted effigies of the Madonna with the Child and of St. Benedict, attributed to Montanini, placed outside.

The earthquake of 1783 caused the loss of frescoes by Filocamo, replaced in 1808 by those of Letterio Subba that were ruined, with all the embodiment, during the earthquake of 1908.
After only two years, Archbishop D'Arrigo promoted the reconstruction of the Church, completed in neo-eclectic style with a happy Romanesque-Gothic influence.
