四季を通して楽しむ湯沢＜冬編＞/Enjoying Echigo Yuzawa through a year<Winter>

ともすれば冬のスノースポーツばかりが連想されてしまう越後湯沢ですが、実は1年を通して日本の四季の移ろいが堪能できるところです。冬の豪雪が豊かで美しい水を湧きあがらせ、やがて日本一美味しいお米や最高質のお酒を産みだすこの土地の魅力があまり知られていないことは残念極まりありません。これから四季の順番に湯沢の隠れた魅力を紹介していきたいと考えています。まずは現時点の冬から始めていきたい、これから時を追って他の季節もご紹介していきます。

エリア 越後湯沢・中里・岩原(新潟)

マンションの購入

　越後湯沢にリゾートマンションの1室を買ったのはすでに20年ほど前。バブル時代の遺産ではありましたが、リフト乗り場のすぐ斜向かい、国道を挟んで目の前には大きな温泉Spaもあり、マンション内にはサウナのついた大浴場やスカッシュコートもあり、管理会社がしっかりしているせいかフロントサービスなども機能していたので、スキーの基地にするには十分過ぎるものでした。勧められた物件はローン保証会社の保有、裏の事情はバブル時代の建設当初に羽振りのよかった東京の不動産屋さんが客の接待用にまとめて5部屋くらい購入、その直後にバブル崩壊で当の不動産屋さんが倒産してそこをローン保証会社が差し押さえたものでほぼ無使用のまま何年も放置されていたものらしい。事情が事情だけに価格はそれほど気にせずに早めに売却したいということで、希望価格はその当時ですでに国産のセダン車くらいの水準。毎冬に何度もスキーに出かける我が家にとってみれば「利用価値」として十分に割安な価格水準でした。とは言え自分もアナリストの端くれですので、物件を購入するに当たっては、収益還元法で厳密にコストに見合う水準を計算し、そこに用いる割引率（Cap rate）まで検討していました。そんなことを頭の中で計算しながらマンションの内見をしていた時にふと目にしたのが写真の光景でした。



マンションのエレベーターはガラス張りになって外が見えるようになっており、これは高層階から外を見下ろした風景。越後連山の間を縫うように魚野川が白い雪の中を黒いうねりとなって流れています。これを見た瞬間、それまで頭の中でこねくり回していた七面倒くさい計算は一瞬で吹っ飛びました。両側を山に挟まれた狭隘な湯沢地域、日本海から江戸へ続く街道の中継地点として栄えた地域の歴史、黒く流れる魚野川がまるでそれまでの湯沢地域の歴史を一枚の絵として表しているかのような幻想に囚われて、「この風景を自分のものにしたい！」と強烈に感じました。と言いながらも、売り手側の言い値で買うことだけはせず、さらに強烈な値下げをお願いして受け入れてもらって、無事にこのマンションの1室は自分のものになりました。人生はやはり計算と合理性だけじゃない。その後の20年間で湯沢のマンション価格はさらに暴落して、当初は国産車程度だった価格はオートバイよりも安くなり、今では原付くらいにまで下落していますが、この間に使い倒した価値を考えればこの当時の決断に後悔はありません。いずれにせよ、自分の東京と湯沢の2拠点人生はこの時に始まりました。


Purchase of Resort Condominium

It was around 20 years ago when I bought Resort condominium in Yuzawa area. Although it was one of “Negative legacy of Bubble economy”, it is located just next to the gondola station of huge ski site and just across the street from big hot spring spa. The building has large bath hall and squash court, and building management was tidy and in order. It was more than enough as the base of my ski life. The offered property belonged to a credit guarantee firm. A real estate overnight millionaire in Tokyo had bought bulk purchase when he was rich but right after the bubble crash he went bankrupt and properties were seized by the credit guarantee firm. So the property had stayed unused already for many years. The firm was not very nervous with the price level, they just wanted to sell off as soon as possible. The offer price was as cheap as a domestic passenger car and it indicated very good “Utility value” as I went for ski many times a year. But I regard myself as an Securities Analyst if not much of one. I calculated the value of property from Income approach and also tried to find the appropriate Captive rate. Then a scenery like the photo has come into my eyes.


I looked down the scene from the elevator of the building. Black stream of Uono river was flowing under the narrow valley in white snow. Right after the moment I saw this, all bothering calculations in my mind were brown away. Sandwiched between mountains the river is flowing just like the history of the people who travelled between Japan seaside and Edo (old calling of Tokyo). The scene reminded me of history and climate of Yuzawa area in a picture scroll. I was trapped in the mind to occupy this scene. Off course I didn’t buy at their asking price, I asked heavy discount and they accepted. Rational calculation and process are not all for my life! The property price had been as much as domestic passenger car in the beginning. It became as cheap as motorcycle and now it is sold below moppet prices. However I have utilized this property at maximum value. I don’t feel sorry for my decision. Anyway my dual base life has started like this.

冬の湯沢―日本有数の豪雪地帯

　冬の湯沢一帯は日本でも有数の豪雪地帯、2月になれば街中でも2m、標高の高いスキー場では4mの雪が積もります。


マンションの駐車場。どの車も前夜に停めたばかりで、一晩でこのくらいは当たり前に積もります。



Yuzawa in Winter―So heavy snow region leading in Japan

Yuzawa region is one of the heaviest snow region in Japan. Once it snows, you see 2m deep snow in the town and 4m deep in high altitude ski resort.

　湯沢町中央公園も冬季は雪の中に埋もれます。左が11月、右が1月初めの写真。2か月でここまで変わります。ついでに言えば、ここから3か月で再び緑の公園に戻ります。湯沢の四季の移ろいは実にダイナミック。




冬の湯沢―やっぱりスキーは欠かせない！

　この豪雪がもたらす恵みはまず第一にやはりスキー場。前節でも書いたように湯沢は
「戦前からのスキー天国」でもあります。日本で初めて商業スキー場として1931年にオープンした岩原（いわっぱら）スキー場を始め、町内だけで12か所、南魚沼地域を含めれば22か所のスキー場が存在する日本最大のスキー場銀座です。
その中でもガーラ湯沢スキー場は新幹線で東京駅と直結、都心から1時間余りでもうスキー場に到着。最近では中国人とタイ人の観光客も目立ち、雪を見たことのない外国人観光客向けに体験ツアーも盛んになっています。首都圏に住むスキー、スノボファンにとっても、最も利便性の高いスキー場のひとつ。また、「三山共通リフト券」を購入すれば、隣の石打丸山スキー場、湯沢高原スキー場まで含めて広大な3つのスキー場をすべて滑り倒すことができます。下にHPのURLを貼り付けておきます。

　ただ自分がホームゲレンデにしているのは「かぐらみつまた」。湯沢駅から三国街道を苗場方面に15分ほど登ったところにあるところ。ここをホームゲレンデにしている理由はおもに二つ。

１． 雪が見事にパウダースノー！
―あくまで個人的見解ですが、湯沢地域のスキー場で自分がやや不満に感じているのは「雪質」。特に湯沢温泉街の付近は標高が300ｍ程度と低く、ちょっと陽が照れば雪がすぐにシャーベットになってしまいます。しかし「かぐらみつまた」は最高標高が1,845ｍと高く、雪はほぼさらさらのパウダー。この雪質は全南魚沼地域で最高の状態！最近知りましたが、スキーファンのインバウンド観光客の間では「ジャパウ」という言葉が話題になっているそうです。「ジャパウ」とは「ジャパン・パウダースノー（Japan Powder Snow）」の略、真冬のスキー場のさらさらとした粉雪は日本のスキー場独自のものらしいです。

２． 広大なスキー場
―「かぐらみつまた」は「みつまたスキー場」、「かぐらスキー場」、さらに「田代スキー場」まで3つのスキー場を合わせた広大なスキー場。みつまた側の駐車場に車を停めてロープウェイでみつまたスキー場に上がります。そこからゴンドラでかぐらスキー場に上り、かぐらの山頂付近から田代スキー場側に一気に滑り降りる格好。さらに若干割増料金はかかりますが、田代スキー場から『ドラゴンドラ（日本最長5,481ｍのゴンドラ）』に乗ればそのまま苗場スキー場にも繋がっています。その滑走面積に関する限り日本でもトップクラスのスキー場に違いなく、スキーツアーが好みのスキーヤーには最高の場所だと考えています。

Yuzawa in Winter―You can never avoid ski!

Heavy snow brings the blessing to ski resort first of all. Just like I described in previous chapter, Yuzawa is “Ski paradise from before the war”. Iwappara ski site was opened in1931 as the first commercial ski resort in Japan and 12 ski sites are in operation in Yuzawa town and 22 of them including larger Minamiuonuma region.
Among them Gala Yuzawa is the most convenient site for Tokyo skiers. The Shinkansen station is the entrance of the site and it takes only 76 minutes from Tokyo. It has become very popular destination for tourists from China and Thailand who have not seen heavy snow.
The “Mount 3 tickets” enables you to enjoy 3 sites of Gala Yuzawa, Ishiuchi Maruyama, and Yuzawa Kogen where you can get magnificent resorts all to yourself. The below is URL of official sites.

Personally I go Kagura Mitsumata resort in most of cases. This ski resort is around 15 minute drive from Echigo Yuzawa station up to the direction of Naeba ski resort. There are mainly 2 reasons I like this place.

1. Snow is perfectly powder!
―Just as my personal opinion, I am a bit frustrated with snow quality in Yuzawa town as it is positioned as low as 300m. In warm and sunny days, snow easily gets wet like sherbet. The top of Kagura Mitsumata is 1,845m and snow is free flowing powder. This is the best condition in whole Minamiuonuma region! I recently learned Inbound ski fans are familiar with the new term “Japaw” which means Japanese Powder Snow.

2. It is so vast!
―Kagura Mitsumata is the complex of 3 ski sites namely, Mitsumata, Kagura, and Tashiro ski sites. The total resort is so vast. And moreover you can go to Naeba ski site from the southern end of Tashiro site by “Dragondora (the longest gondora in Japan of 5,481m)” if you purchase special ticket. As for skiing area, this is the top ranked resort in Japan.

こちらはみつまたスキー場の反対側、田代ロープウェイステーションからの遠景。かなり小さいんですが、向うに苗場プリンスホテルも見えます。

This is a view from Tashiro ropeway station, another end from Mitsumata. You can see Naeba Prince Hotel in distant view.

田代スキー場の端にある『ドラゴンドラ』。三国連山の中を縫うように苗場スキー場までの5,481ｍを結んでいます。冬にはカモシカも見えることがあり、秋には紅葉観光の客でにぎわいます。

This is “Dragondora” at the end of Tashiro. You can go to Naeba ski resort by this along Mikuni mountain range. You might see Japanese deer in the snow and in Autumn it is very popular for tourists looking for Autumn color leaves.

みつまたスキー場を出てすぐの「道の駅みつまた」にある温泉施設。さすがに内部の写真は撮れませんが、露天風呂もついています。雪の降りしきるなか、スキーで消耗した体を露天風呂に沈めるとつくづく人生の幸せを実感します。


This is Hot Spring spa just off Mitsumata parking lot. There is Rotenburo (Outside bath) as well. You certainly feel the joy of life when you lower yourself in hot tab after ski in falling snow.

温泉の向かいにある売店と食堂の施設には無料の「足湯」も併設されています。足湯に浸かりながら食事をすることも可能（もちろんお酒も飲めます！）。

豊富な温泉施設

　湯沢町内には公営の温泉浴場が5か所あり、1,500円の「外湯巡り券」を購入すればすべての温泉施設に入浴することができます。



さらに民間の日帰り入浴施設まで含めれば温泉に入れる場所は無数にあります。もちろん温泉は一年中入れますが、何と言ってもその醍醐味は冷えた体を熱いお湯に浸せる冬の雪見風呂でしょう。

　湯沢町内ではないのですが、車でほんの5分ほど走ると石打丸山スキー場があり、その傍らにユングパルナス石打というSpaがあります。ここには大型の内湯のほか、露天風呂、薬草湯、各種サウナなど非常に楽しめる施設になっています。リラックススペースや食堂、カラオケなどもありますので、ここで1日過ごすこともできます。下のURLをご参照のこと。

　もしもあなたが大変な“温泉マニア”で、なおかつ車を持っていれば、湯沢から山を一つ越えて十日町方面にある「千年の湯」をお勧めします。ここは紛れもない天然温泉の掛け流しで、内湯にサウナ、大きな露天風呂から仮眠室までついている豪華な施設ですが料金は600円（大人）。首都圏に同じスケールの施設があれば2,800円くらいにはなるんじゃないだろうか。泉質も非常に濃いもので、温泉マニアでも十分満足できるものと思います。

Hot spring spa is everywhere

There are 5 public spa in Yuzawa town. With “Round bath ticket” of 1,500 yen you can try all of them.


When you include privately run spa, you have countless occasions to try Spa in the area. You can try Hot spa always but the best occasion is snowing winter at hot tab.

Although it is not within Yuzawa town, just 5 minute drive takes you huge spa named Jungparnas Ishiuchi besides Ishiuchi Maruyama ski resort. This facility includes big inside bath, outer bath, herb bath, and saunas. You can use relax space, diners, or Karaoke. You can spend a whole day here. HP is as followings.

If you are deep “Hot spa mania” and have a car, I truly recommend “Sennen no yu” in Tokamachi area over the mountain (around 40 minutes). This facility is 100% true natural hot spring and includes inside bath, outer bath, sauna, relax space, and diners. The next house is swimming pool. And admission fee is only 600 yen! If it were located Tokyo metropolitan area, it would cost as much as 2,800 yen.

冬の湯沢　おまけその①：インバウンド向けホステルがオープン

　湯沢駅東口から歩いて3分の場所に『Sansan Yuzawa Caf&eacute; and Bar & Backpackers』が昨年秋にオープンしました。温泉旅館と民宿が多かった湯沢には珍しく、ホステルタイプの宿で、午後からはカフェバーも開いています。


かつては「民宿　金沢屋」として営業していたところ、看板を外していないのは何か事情があるのか、予算の関係か。


Yuzawa in Winter extra contents①：Hostel specially designed for Inbound Tourists

　　　　Just 3 minute walk from Echigo Yuzawa station (East exit) takes you “Sansan Yuzawa Caf&eacute; and Bar & Backpackers” which opened in 2017. Yuzawa town is almost dominated by traditional type of Onsen(Hot spring) hotels and smaller guesthouses. But this hostel is specially designed for inbound tourists and you can visit Caf&eacute; and Bar from afternoon.


The house had been operated as a “Guesthouse Kanazawaya” and ad panel is still on the wall. Is it due to budget or any special situations?

上の写真のように、1階がカフェスペース、貸し切りにすれば30人程度の宴会ができそうなくらいスペースがあります。2，3階が宿泊スペースになっており、共同ベッドと個室と合わせて27床のキャパシティ。夜になると宿泊している外国人ゲストと地元の方々が酒を酌み交わすコミュニティスペースとして機能しています。
　実は写真の中に経営者の横顔だけこっそり載せてしまいました。かおりさんと言う関西出身の若い女性で、10代からバックパッカーでアジアを回っていたそう。湯沢にこれまで無かった機能をもたらすのは、従来のローカル発想に捕らわれない外部の人間のような気がします。願わくばオープンしたばかりのこの場所が、将来の湯沢の可能性を開く一端になってくれれば。施設のURLは以下になります。

The ground floor is Caf&eacute; space which looks quite spacious, maybe enough for 30 people party. 2nd and 3rd floors are hostel space of total 27 beds, including private rooms. Tourists often come down to Caf&eacute; at night and you can see communication with local people.

I mixed up the sideway shot of manager’s face among 3 photos above. She is Ms. Kaori, young Japanese lady from Western Japan. I heard that she had travelled around Asian area from her teen ages. I feel the innovation in Yuzawa area is to be brought by fresh people from outside who are not trapped by conventional local style. Hopefully this place is to become the starting point to see new Yuzawa in future. URL is as followings.

冬の湯沢　おまけその②：“首無し地蔵”の謎

　以前から不思議に思っているのですが、土地の人に聞いても確たる答えが返ってきません。ホテル　スポーリア湯沢の前から国道17号にぶつかった交差点にある写真の“首無し地蔵”・・・。こんな不気味なものが昔から立っているのですから、何か言い伝えがあると思うんですが。事情をご存知の方がいらっしゃれば教えていただきたく。


読者の方に決して呪いが降りかかりませんように。


Yuzawa In Winter extra contents②：Mysterious “Headless Jizo”
Jizo: Stone made Guardian deity of children

Although I have recognized this for long time, I can’t find the story behind this object. This Jizo statue is located at intersection of route 17 and street from Hotel Sporea Yuzawa. Such a mysterious being have existed from long time ago. There must be some story. Please let me know if somebody knows the truth.
