Day 1: 新千歳〜（ソウル/仁川）〜チェンマイ　移動日

Day 2: チェンマイ市内・近郊の観光地巡り＆グルメ

Day 3: トレッキングに向け買い出し・移動・歩き＆
　　　　ポーカレン族（山岳少数民族）のお宅にホームステイ

Day 4: 村の皆さんとさようなら、渓流沿いの5つ星ホテルへ向けた
　　　 山歩き＆沢渡り

Day 5: 沢登り、コウモリの洞窟、up up and upの登り坂
　　　 チェンマイに戻る、日曜夜市

Day 6: のんびりチェンマイ散歩、最後のお買いもの＆夕食、
　　　　チェンマイにさようなら

トレッキングツアー前夜。

理想的な「最小限の荷物」と現実的な「なければ困る」
でしばし迷う。
この間、中庭のレストランでは大音響の「プレスリー・
ライブ」..。「熟睡」の野望、叶わず。

The previous night of the 3-day trekking.
" To bring, or not to bring: that is the
question."

It was not until 0:30 when the Elvis tribute
live in the center court finished, and　my
room was, of course, right above loud speakers
....

いよいよ出発！

Off we go!

まずは庶民の市場で、3日分の食料を調達。

First we did some grocery shopping for the
next 3 days.

レモンイエローのチェンマイ鶏

Chiang Mai chicken-the lemon yellow legs are
so unique!

さすが、ごはん食い文化圏

Many different types of rice.

カリカリおやつ、豚皮チップス。定番です。

Pig skin crisps, a popular snack.

サモサ的揚げおやつ。
中身はチキン＆ポテト、カレー味の豆など...

ほっかむりをした店番のお姉さんにイスラム的挨拶をしたら
顔がパッと明るくなった。

Fried snack (samosa) stand.
The shop lady seemed like a muslim so I greeted
her with the muslim greeting, and her face brightened.

お供えセット。ラッピングにも贅を尽くしています。

ココナツ風味の、たこ焼き風おやつ。
親切なお姉さん、蓋取ってくれてばっちりカメラ目線。

The lady took off the lid to show me how it was
being cooked.

（帰り道、仏教寺院の敷地に置かれているのを発見！）

街角の小さなカフェ。美味しいエスプレッソにありつけました。

A cute little cafe: the lady elegantly made my espresso.

気持ち良さそう。

そこそこの距離を移動してきました。

Approx. 130 km from Chiang Mai.

昼食＠ドライブイン「カレン食堂」
（*ビーチリゾートではありません）

Lunch at a Karen Diner.
(in the middle of mountains, not on the beach)

スープもついて、完璧な「焼きそば弁当」タイ・バージョン。
麺が不規則な幅のきしめんのよう。

赤いのはローズ・アップルという果物。シャリシャリ食感に
ほんのりとした甘さ、初めての味。

Fried noodle with soup. Rose apple is for dessert.

2名だけ、汁そばが当たる。
これもおいしそう。

パンダ柄のテーブルクロスが印象的。

お隣は「カレン商店」

A Karen grocery shop.

トレッキングでの入山届を観光警察の支署に提出する。

A trekking party member list needs to be submitted
to the local branch of the tourist police.

トラックの荷台に乗り、トレッキング出発地点へ。

We were made to sit on the back of a truck to
get to where we were going to start our trekking.

トレッキング用ポールは現地調達。カレン男子にかかれば
ほんの数分、というところか。ささくれでトゲが刺さらない
よう、ナタ＆ナイフでスムージングという念の入れよう。

The ecotour guide Mr. Tee and the porters skillfully
and instantly made our trekking poles with materials
available within 5 meter radius: they even smoothed
the surface!

ホームステイ先（この日の目的地）があるカレン族の集落のこと、
周辺の畑作・放牧・多目的林、その外側にある保全林について
説明を受ける。

説明を聞きながらも見事な膝蓋骨に目を奪われる私。


Mr. Tee, the guide explaining us the land use- how the
Karen people's settlements (our destination of the day),
community forests and farms and conservation forests are
formed.

I was listening to him hard, and couldn't help but
stare at his impeccable kneecap....

森の中で、カレン族とタバコに関する解説が、デモ付き
で行われる。

Demonstration of what was being told:
A porter is rolling a cigarette using a fallen leaf.

巨大なた豆....みたいなもの。全長50センチ。振ると
ガラガラと音がするので楽器として使うらしい。

Looks like a Green Pea Giant fossile. Used as
a musical instrument like the maracas.

向こうはビルマ。
国境って何なんだろう。

Burma must be not so far from this point.
Makes me wonder what border is.

.....実は、結構な斜度。

Doesn't look like it but it is quite steep.

野生のバナナは葉っぱだけ使う。実は小さく種ばかりなので食べない。

Wild bananas are not for eating: leaves are used as
food wrappers and plates.

そうこうしているうちに、雨雲接近！

Oops, rain clouds approaching. Run!

濡れながら、目的地の村までダッシュ。

村人と交わす言葉はいつでも「タブルー・ニーボニター」
（ありがとう＆健康をお祈りします、の意）でＯＫらしい。

誰ですか、「リポビタンデー」とか言ってる方は...（笑）

Dashed to the village, the destination/accommodation
of this day.
The almighty greeting words to villagers are pronounced
something like "Tabluu ni bonitha"
(meaning, "Thank you" and "wishing you good health." )

17：30頃。室内から外を見る。暗さが懐かしくも温かい。

国王のプロジェクトで各戸にソーラーパネルが設置されている。
２〜３年後にはケーブルによる電力供給が始まるとの話。

建材は主に竹や草木の葉、つる性のもの。
究極のオーガニック住宅。

Around 17:30, looking outside from the guests' reception
space in our hostfamily's house.
As a part of the King's project, solar panels are
installed for each, or a few houses, and electricity
will be supplied by cables in a couple of years' time.

Materials of this house are bamboo, plant leaves, and
some vine: an ultimate organic house, isn't it.

いつのまにか、ご近所さんも集まって....

Villagers definitely knew that we were
staying there that night

私たちが村人と戯れている間、カレン男子は厨房でせっせとお料理
（＊お米を突いて精米し炊くのはお母さん）

While we were playing with kids and trying to communicate
with the locals, Karen gentlemen were busy cooking.
(Woman of the house is responsible for cooking rice.)

この日の夕食メニュー：グリーンカレー、野菜の炒め物２種、
ワイルドライス、フルーツ

Dinner: Green curry, two kinds of stir fry vegetables,
wild rice? and fruit.

夕食後、①カレン族の死生観、②婚姻制度、③その他に
ついてTeeさんから聞く。

①５０歳以下で亡くなると火葬、以上で亡くなると土葬
が一般的。仏教徒のように輪廻転生の思想はなく、天国
に召され（戻り）幸せに....という考え方なので、火葬
の場合は煙となって、土葬の場合は樹木の成長と共に、
魂が空へ上ると考える。

②独身男性は、どの家庭に未婚女性がいるか信頼おける
情報網（今で言うマッピングシステム？）があり、アタッ
クする場合は夕食後にそのお宅へ赴き、父さん母さん交え
お喋りなどをして帰ってくる...いい感じの娘さんだったら
それを繰り返す。「あれ、思ったほどではないかも..」と
思った場合は、丁寧においとまをして帰宅する。

結婚に関しては、いとこ同士までがダメ。それ以外は、
国籍・宗教・年齢問わず親が認めてくれればＯＫ。
姉さん女房が多く基本的に婿入り婚。披露宴は、花嫁、
花婿、それぞれの村で丸二日間続くく。厳密な一夫一婦
制で「カレン・オトコ・スケベ・ダメ」（Teeさん、なぜ
ここだけ日本語が使えるのか、謎）

その他：

●自然の中のいろんな場所・物に「ピ」（精霊とか神さま
　の意味）が宿っていると考える。ニワトリのピが最も
　神聖？

●目上が目下を名前で呼ぶのは良いが、その反対はダメ。
　子供もお父さんとお母さんの名前を知らず「おとうさん」
　「おかあさん」と呼ぶ。
　一説には自分の夫を探すとき「○○（自分の子どもの名前）
　の父親はどこか知りませんか？」という聞き方をするとか...

A bit of briefing about Karen's way of life and values over coffee
and tea after dinner.

カレン族の夜は早い。
乾期なので蚊の心配はないものの、念のため...と蚊帳を
つるしてくれ、そのココロ遣いが温かくありがたい。
この日は満月だったのか。月明かりに見とれつつ、９時半
消灯..........が、
久々の寝袋＆硬い床に寝つけず、何度も寝返りを打つ。
水琴のように雨水が垂れる音、木々が風に揺れる音、鳥、
カエル、コオロギ等の鳴き声...山の夜は意外と騒々しく、
ちょっと楽しくもある。

それらを聞きながらウトウトしては目ざめ.....を繰り返す。

そのうち、まだ暗い中一番鶏が時の声。（４時でした。）
きのうエルビス、今日は鶏。（涙）

Almost full moon. While trying to sleep, many
different　kinds of sounds came into my ears, and of
course, I became so awake....

I kept tossing and turning, not knowing if I was
really sleeping, then after repeating this mode
for some time, roosters cock-a-doodle-dooed one by
one.
It was 4:00. Still pitch black outside.

３番鶏の頃（５時）。ごはんを炊くかまどの火を見ながら
お父さんとお母さんが話す声。柔らかく心地よい。

When roosters alarm went off for the third time. (5:00)
host father and mother were sitting by the fire, cooking
rice.

貫禄たっぷりの雄鶏。
（あと２時間、遅く鳴いてくれるとありがたいのだけど...。）

As accurate as a Swiss clock...

たぶん人生初の、地上で見る雲海。
自然からの大っきなプレゼント。タブルッ！

A wonderful and surprising gift from nature.
First time to see this on land.

稜線上のシルエットが人のよう。

As if pilgrims were standing there.

2日目の朝食。スープのおいしい雑炊、スクランブルエッグ、
果物はパパイヤとドラゴンフルーツ。

2nd day breakfast:
Rice porridge, scrambled egg, salad, dragon fruit
and papaya.

小さなカレンボーイズ＆ガールズ。
君たちの将来に幸多かれと祈ります。

Cute little Karen boys and girls.
You are the future!

余暇を使って、女は機織り。
色彩といい模様といい、それはそれは素晴らしい手仕事。

W・O・N・D・E・R・F・U・L！

私が出会った最年少カレン男子。
（もちろん下はスッポンポン）
機織りお母ちゃんをじっと見ています。

He was looking at his mom weaving.

野生のはちみつ（蜂の巣）を取ってきてくれて、惜しげもなく
差し出してくれた、名人。蜂箱の長方形しか見たことがないの
で、丸型に感激！そしてそして、

うま〜〜〜〜〜い！！

Mrs. Long's husband. Fetched honey combs in the
forest and offered them to us to try. Ummmmm......
THIS is honey!

強烈な日差し。屋根の上で、お米を乾かす。

Rice being dried on the roof.

この時は、まだこんな姿だったんだけど....

Our company. They kept their original shapes until
the night of this day....

もう1つの集落で休憩したあと、この道路の先の急な下り坂＝崖
（感覚的には200ｍぐらいあったような....）を下りて沢に出る。

ひざが笑う寸前。やばいっす！

After a break in another village, we needed to go
down a steep hill ahead of this path.
Glad I brought my knee supporter... otherwise,
I couldn't have made it.

沢に出た。マジでキツイ下りだった....。
体重落とさなきゃ...（汗）

It was so nice to be near water and in the shade,
as it was such a hot day.

  植物系ですよね？表面はウロコ状で爬虫類を連想させますが、皮をむくと、中から大小７、８個の小房が現れるに違いありません。
