観音寺市における最も注目すべき観光スポットである。琴弾公園の松林に突如として出現したかのような『寛永通宝』の砂絵は、訪れる人全ての目を見張ることだろう。
1633年、将軍である徳川家光の巡遣使を歓迎するため、地元の有志によって一夜のうちに作られたとされる。現在は地元のボランティアによって定期的に整備されている、という。
この砂絵を見るには、間近まで近づくか、展望台から見下ろすかのどちらかになる。砂絵の周回部分にまで近づくことはできるが、砂絵の中には立ち入ることが出来ない。近くで見ると、巨大な砂の盛り上がりが眼前に広がる程度で、事前に情報を仕入れない限りそれが何かを理解するのは難しいだろう。一方で展望台から見下ろすことで、砂絵の全体像を見ることが出来る。
環境保全のため、砂絵の周囲には飲食店などは存在しない。飲食物の持ち込みは特に禁止されていないようだが、ゴミ箱等も周囲には設置されていないので、ゴミは持ち帰るか近隣のゴミ箱に捨てる必要がある。

It's the most famous tourist attraction in Kannonji City. The "Kan'ei Tsuho" sand paintings that seem to have suddenly appeared in the pine forests of Kotodama Park are a sight to behold for all visitors.
It's said to have been created overnight by local volunteers in 1633 to welcome the envoy of Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Today, it's regularly maintained by local volunteers.
To see the sand paintings, visitors can either get up close to them or look down from the observatory. Visitors can approach the perimeter of the sand paintings, but are not allowed to enter them. When you see it up close, you can only see a huge heap of sand spread out before your eyes, and it would be difficult to understand what it is unless you have information about it beforehand. On the other hand, looking down from the observatory, one can see the whole picture of the sand painting.
For environmental preservation, there are no restaurants or stores around the sand paintings. It seems that bringing in food and drink is not prohibited, but there are no garbage cans around the area, so you need to take your garbage home with you or throw it in a nearby garbage can.
