この祈念館には『平和』と銘打っているが、『戦争そのもの』というより、戦時（特に末期）及び戦後に住民を苛み苦しませてきたマラリア感染という『間接的な戦禍』の経緯と収束に向けた努力や行程が展示されている祈念館である。
八重山諸島は直接的な戦禍に巻き込まれたわけではない（そのため、『戦争そのもの』の資料の展示は極めて少ない）が、冬季でも暑く湿度の高い気候、当時は充分な医療体制があるわけがなく、さらに沖縄本島は壊滅的な被害を被ったため、治療のための応援を呼ぶに呼べない。そうした重複した悪因が重なり、何千何万という住民がマラリア感染によって命を失った。

「砲弾に晒されていないからといって、戦争が終了しているからといって、すぐに平和の状態であるとは言えない。戦争によって引き起こされた災禍は、戦争が終了した後も、砲弾とは違う形で襲い掛かり、無辜の民はそれが止むまで苛まれ苦しみ続けることになる」

このことを、直に感じられる祈念館と言える。

展示室は小規模で、周回だけであれば1時間と要しない。石垣市街地からやや離れた場所にあるため、ほとんどの場合で車で来館する（駐車場スペースは充分にある）。入口には段差があるため、車椅子等の障碍を持つ方にとってはやや利用しづらいと感じるかもしれない。展示物は基本的に撮影禁止である。

The Yaeyama Islands were not directly involved in the ravages of war (for this reason, there are very few exhibits of materials on the war itself), but the climate was hot and humid even in winter, there was no adequate medical system at that time, and the main island of Okinawa was devastated, so it was impossible to call for support for treatment. These factors combined to cause a large number of residents to lose their lives to malaria infection.

"The fact that we are not exposed to shells, that the war has ended, does not immediately mean that we are in a state of peace. The calamities caused by the war will strike in a different form than shells even after the war is over, and innocent people will continue to be tormented and suffer until they cease."

This is a memorial hall where one can directly feel this.

The exhibition rooms are small, and it does not take more than an hour just to go around. Since the museum is located somewhat far from downtown Ishigaki, most visitors come to the museum by car (there is enough parking space). There are steps at the entrance, which may be a little difficult for visitors with disabilities such as wheelchairs. Photography of exhibits is generally prohibited.
