今や沖縄旅の定番スポットとなっている人気の水族館です。
沖縄周辺の海域を中心に、主に熱帯～亜熱帯の海水魚や海洋生物を展示しており、中には深海魚も展示されています。海洋生物の研究も盛んで、水族館では主に海洋生物の展示が主体ですが、別の建物（総合休憩所（美ら海プラザ））では骨格を始めとした標本や生態・生殖に関することを学ぶことが出来ます。
特に目を見張るのは、何といっても巨大な水槽に悠然と泳ぐジンベイザメでしょう。記念撮影のために特に休日には大勢の家族連れで賑わいます。余裕を以て写真撮影するのであれば、平日の特に午前中であれば比較的空いているのでお勧めです。その他、テーマに即した生物の展示（有毒生物、光を発する生物　等）もあり、好奇心を引き立てさせる構成となっています。
建物自体も独特で、建築物好きとしても注目の的の水族館です。なお、イルカのショーやウミガメ館・マナティー館は無料で利用できます。

It exhibits mainly tropical and subtropical saltwater fish and marine life, mainly from the waters around Okinawa, and some deep-sea fish are also exhibited. Research on marine life is also active, and while the aquarium mainly exhibits marine life, there is a separate building (Churaumi Plaza) where visitors can learn about skeletons and other specimens, as well as ecology and reproduction.
The whale shark swimming in a huge tank is particularly striking. On weekends and holidays, many families come to the park to take pictures. If you want to take photos of the whale shark (with you) with more time to spare, weekdays, especially in the morning, are recommended as they are relatively empty. There are also theme-based exhibits (e.g., poisonous creatures, light-emitting creatures, etc.) that are designed to arouse curiosity.
The building itself is also unique, making this aquarium a hot spot for architecture lovers. The dolphin show, sea turtle exhibit, and manatee exhibit are free of charge.
