三島市の中心に位置する神社です。『三島』という名前は伊豆諸島を指す『御島』に由来し、古来より活発に起きていた伊豆諸島の火山活動や地震から土地や街を鎮守するためにこの神社が設けられました。東海道中にこの神社があり、源頼朝を始め名高い武将の崇敬の対象となり、国宝を始め、様々な神宝が収められているそうです。
敷地は南北に約350m、東西に約150m程で、境内を周遊するだけであれば1時間程度で済みます。社殿を始めとする現在の建物は、1930年の北伊豆地震による倒壊によって修復されたもので、いずれも比較的新しいですが、往年の面影を残す史料が多いことから、当時の状況を可能な限り再現して建てられたそうです。
三島駅からやや距離がありますが、徒歩で行くことの出来ない距離というわけではありません。三島市内を散策しながら神社に参拝に訪れるといいかもしれません。
