青森出身の棟方志功氏や奈良美智氏の作品が多く展示されているのが特徴。一際目を引くのが『あおもり犬』。普段は間近に行くことが出来るのですが、冬季、特に雪が降る季節ですと積雪のため（『あおもり犬』は屋外展示）立ち入り禁止。その代り、雪のベレー帽をかぶった『あおもり犬』を見ることが出来ます。
展示物を鑑賞し楽しむのと他に、美術館の建物そのものを楽しむ、という楽しみ方もあります。非常に独特な空間の使い方で、白い壁、コンクリートむき出しの壁を基調に、3～4階分ぶち抜きの空間だったり、狭い部屋に展示物が密集したり、時間・空間感覚を麻痺させるような真っ白な空間だったり。美術館『そのもの』だけでも楽しめるんじゃないか、と思ってしまうくらいです。

It is an art museum that many arts of Shiko Munakata and Yoshitomo Nara from Aomori Prefecture are exhibited. The biggest feature of this museum is "Aomori-dog". Although you can usually appreciate at close, when it is snowing, you appreciate it from inside the building. If you are lucky, you may be able to see the Aomari-Dog with a snow beret!
Not only the appreciation of the exhibits but also the museum itself is very strange and interesting. It uses space very uniquely. You may experience a mysterious sensation that paralyzes the sense of time and space...
