ここに来るたびに、原爆投下という凄惨な出来事が人類に突きつけたものをまざまざと思い出させる。物言わぬその遺構は、無機質だが残酷だ。はっきりと「大量破壊兵器を投下すれば、全てを無残にさせる」と物語っているからだ。訪れる全ての人に知ってもらいたいために、案内は日本語の他、英語・中国語・韓国語で書かれている。ここを通る人のほとんどは笑顔はない。ただ、じっと人類が過去に仕出かした過ちの結果を見つめている。
いつもではないが、往時を生きた人が、この近辺で語り部として活動している。日本語は勿論、英語等の他言語でも語り部をしている。是非、彼らの話を聞いてもらいたい。
ただの遺構、ただの世界遺産ではない。「私達の未来は、私達の選択次第で、良くも悪くもなる。私達は何を選ぶべきか」、そう考えずにはいられないところの一つだ。
