“ Japanese even to such a remote area ” Someone on my back uttered in somewhat irritated tone in a bus going to Dam of Lake Rawil.
I did not care it at all. And, of course, I did not look back. Rather, I just felt sorry our predecessors had made them feel bad as I was well informed of such sort of things.
But, early in my career of trip in Switzerland, I had an experience to have unintentionally fought back against harmful words from westerners to our nationality.
In a restaurant for guests of a middle class English style hotel in Wengen, I wore jacket and tie and my wife one-piece, and others guests wore similarly, and we exchanged greeting words each other before seating.
In some 30 minutes later, came in a group of some 10 people, all dressed down without greeting to anyone and seemed to sit together at table in the bottom. They seemed to be French, not within Switzerland.
They were loud speakers from the beginning. Then, we heard frequent words of JAPONAIS followed by big ridiculing laughs. There were some other guests shrugged their shoulders looking at us. But, again I just winked back to them, and only told my wife what was going on.
After dinner, we went out to particiapte in a festival of the village held on that evening without asking the location of main site at the hotel, thinking it was easy to find.
But, we could not. Then, saw a French speaking group walking towards us. So, I asked one of them. He said he did not know either, and suggested me to visit the railway station. I replied to have already visited there to have found it closed. So I would follow the sound of festival relying on my ears, or something like that. And we left them with greeting words.
My wife told me afterward that they were the group of the hotel, and some of them looked really surprised, knowing I could speak French.
Though not understanding what they had been actually talking about at the hotel, I could easily guess how awful it was.
In the next evening, they were already at their table, and very calm. In the third, they were at outside restaurant among general visitors.
Some years later, after such experiences, I spoke to a Japanese friend who lived in Switzerland using, instead of direct word of country name, Italia or Itaria, the boot- shaped country in Japanese. He immediately understood my intention, and used the same word afterward, though we never spoke ill of this country.
