鶴岡八幡宮の境内にある博物館で、鶴岡八幡宮に伝わる宝物（の一部）や各種記録、もしくは、鎌倉時代から室町時代における、鎌倉の各種記録等が展示されている。
非常に近代的で幾何学的な建物でありながら、景観を損ねることなく、鶴岡八幡宮の境内の雰囲気に溶け込むような佇まいとなっている。
展示室は建物の2階にあり、展示スペースはじっくり鑑賞せず一巡だけであれば30分は要さない程度の広さである。往年の鎌倉に伝わる歴史や文化を知る上で非常に興味深い博物館ではあるものの、（展示内容に依るのかもしれないが）料金は高めに設定されているようにも感じる（勿論、建築物や展示品の維持管理等に必要なのかもしれないが）。
私が利用した時も、休日であり鶴岡八幡宮自体には多くの参拝客が訪れていたにも関わらず、この博物館の利用者はまばらであった。また、各展示物の解説は多くが日本語表記のみであるため、外国人観光客にはややとっつきづらいと感じるかもしれない。一方で、その環境であるからこそ、（鶴岡八幡宮を含む鎌倉駅周辺の）混雑を避け、ゆったりしながら鎌倉の歴史や文化を鑑賞したい、という人にはうってつけなのかもしれない。

This museum is located within the precincts of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine and displays a selection of treasures and historical records associated with the shrine, as well as materials relating to the history of Kamakura from the Kamakura through Muromachi periods.
The building itself is strikingly modern and geometric, yet its design does not detract from the historic surroundings. Instead, it blends surprisingly well with the atmosphere of the shrine grounds.
The exhibition gallery is located on the second floor. It's relatively compact, and if you simply walk through without examining each exhibit in detail, you can probably see everything in less than 30 minutes. The museum provides an interesting introduction to Kamakura's history and culture, although I felt that the admission fee was somewhat high for the size of the exhibition. This feeling may, of course, vary depending on the exhibition being held, and the cost of maintaining both the building and its collections also needs to be taken into consideration.
When I visited on a weekend, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu itself was crowded with worshippers and tourists, yet there were only a handful of people inside the museum. One important point for international visitors is that much of the explanatory text accompanying the exhibits is available only in Japanese. Travelers who cannot read Japanese may therefore find it somewhat difficult to fully appreciate the historical context of what is on display.
On the other hand, the lack of crowds can also be one of the museum's greatest advantages. If you would like to escape the busy streets around Kamakura Station and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu for a while and explore Kamakura's history and culture at a relaxed pace, this museum can be a particularly pleasant place to visit.
