屋根瓦、家屋の壁、塀など、多くの多くが赤銅色に染められた景観が印象的な街並みである。
江戸時代中期から鉱山の町として発展し、今も尚陶器などの器や服飾の染料として『べんがら』が生産されている。土産物店を除くと、トップスやボトムズに加え、帽子や鞄、スカーフに至るまで、鮮やかな赤銅色に染められた品々を目にするだろう。
街並み自体が入り組んだ作りになっておらず、ほぼ一本道に土産物店や飲食店が軒を連ねるため、迷う機会はほぼ無いに等しい。一本道は緩やかな坂になっており、決して昇り降りしづらいわけではないが、ゆっくり道を走る軽乗用車（グリーンスローモビリティ）が利用できる。
この街並みは、可能であれば晴れの日と雨の日の両方訪れることを推奨する。雨の日は濃い茶色となり、やや重苦しいが落ち着いた雰囲気を与える。一方晴れの日、特に日差しが降り注ぐと、赤銅色は鮮やかな朱色となり、文字通り『朱く染まった街並み』という印象を与えるだろう。
この街並みを散策する上で、特に白色の服を着ている場合は注意が必要となる。べんがらが塗られた木製の壁や塀を触ると、たとえ塗られてから年単位が経過しても、染料が指に付着するのに気づくだろう。手や指なら洗って落とせるが、衣服、特に白などの明るい色の布に付着すると容易に落とせない。安易に壁や塀に寄りかかることがないように注意して散策することをお勧めする。

This townscape is striking for its distinctive reddish-brown (bengara) color, seen on roof tiles, walls, and fences throughout the area.
The town developed as a mining community from the mid-Edo period, and even today, bengara pigment is still produced here for use in ceramics and textile dyeing. Beyond the souvenir shops, you'll also find a variety of items - such as clothing, hats, bags, and scarves - dyed in this vivid reddish hue.
The layout of the area is simple and easy to navigate. Most shops and restaurants line a single main street, so it's unlikely that you will get lost. The road itself is a gentle slope - not difficult to walk - but you may also notice small, slow-moving electric vehicles (green slow mobility carts) operating along the street.
If possible, it's highly recommended to visit this area both on a sunny day and a rainy day. In the rain, the colors deepen into a darker brown, creating a calm and somewhat subdued atmosphere. On sunny days, especially under strong sunlight, the reddish tones become much more vivid, giving the impression of a town literally "painted in red".
One important note when walking around: be cautious if you are wearing light-colored clothing, especially white. The bengara pigment used on wooden walls and fences can still transfer to your hands even years after application. While it can be washed off your skin, it may be difficult to remove from clothing. Avoid leaning against walls or fences to prevent staining.
