江戸時代には水戸と千住を繋ぐ水戸街道沿いには、大名・公家・幕府役人などの宿場として利用された本陣がいくつも存在していたが、現在は三つしか現存せず、この本陣はその中でも最も大きい建物となっている。さらに、他の二つの本陣（中貫宿と稲吉宿にある建物）は、現在も居住者が居るため、外観を見ることが出来るが（許可がない限り）建物内に入ることは出来ない。無料で立ち入ることが出来、外観だけでなく内部も自由に撮影が出来るのはここだけである。
とは言え、この建物は住宅に囲まれており、出入り口も周囲の住宅の出入り口と共用であるため、案内のサインが無ければどこから出入りすればいいのか分からないだろう。入館に際し何らかの手続きを行う必要はない。地元のボランティアの人が入口に座っていることがあるが、来客が能動的に申し出ない限り、彼等が来館者に何らかのガイド等をすることは無い。
本陣となった染野家は、取手宿の名主を務めた家柄であったため、建物内は比較的広く、また部屋の数も多く、往年の名家としての面影を感じさせる。役人が宿泊する本陣の区画と、当時の染野家の住人や使用人の居住区画は明確に分かれており、特に本陣の区画は非常に精錬された造りとなっている。
建物内に入る際は、靴を脱ぐ必要がある。専用の下駄箱は無いため、靴の取違いには注意されたい。車椅子の方でも自由に館内を見学できるよう、専用の車椅子が一台常備されている。

In the Edo period, there were a number of Honjin (main lodges) along the Mito Kaido Road connecting Mito and Senju, which were used as inns for feudal lords, court nobles, and shogunate officials. Currently, only three remain, and this is the largest of the three. In addition, the other two Honjins (located in Nakanuki-juku and Inayoshi-juku) are still occupied, so visitors can see the exterior but are not allowed to enter the buildings (without permission). This is the only place where visitors can enter free of charge and take pictures not only of the exterior but also of the interior.
However, the building is surrounded by houses, and the entrances and exits are shared with those of the surrounding houses, so without signs, it would be difficult to know where to enter and exit the building. There is no need to go through any formalities to enter the building. Local volunteers sometimes sit at the entrance, but they do not give visitors any kind of guidance unless visitors actively request it.
The Someno family served as the headquarters of the Toride-juku, so the building is relatively spacious and has many rooms, reminding us of a famous family of yesteryear. The main quarters, where officials stayed, and the quarters where the Some-no Family's residents and servants lived at that time were clearly separated, and the quarters of the main quarters in particular are very elaborately constructed.
Shoes must be removed when entering the building. There is no special shoe box, so please be careful not to take the wrong shoes. A wheelchair is always available for wheelchair users to tour it.
