貨幣や紙幣についてのあれこれが学べる博物館です。海外で使用された貨幣や紙幣もいくつかは展示されていますが、ほとんどが日本国内で流通されていたものであるため、展示の説明もほぼ日本語のみです。
貨幣や紙幣の形状・素材・使われ方が、歴史的にどのような変遷を辿ってきたかだけでなく、偽造防止・価値の維持・官民の知恵と努力・金融政策に至るまで幅広い内容が展示されており、展示室はワンフロアのみであるにもかかわらず、周回するだけでも1時間は簡単に超えます。子供にも分かりやすい説明であるため、子供も熱心に展示を眺めているところを見かけました。無料で利用できることもあり、特に休日は多くの人が来館します。
管理運営が日本銀行金融研究所であるからか、セキュリティは厳しく、入り口で手荷物検査が行われます。撮影可能なデバイスの持ち込みが禁止されているわけではありませんが、展示の撮影は禁止です（展示室内には常時数人の警備員が警備に当たっています）。

This is a museum where you can learn various things about coins and paper money. Although there are some coins and paper money used overseas, most of them were circulated in Japan, so the explanations are almost exclusively in Japanese.
The exhibition covers a wide range of topics, from the historical evolution of the shape, material, and use of coins and paper money to anti-counterfeiting, value maintenance, the wisdom and efforts of the public and private sectors, and monetary policy. Although the exhibition is only on one floor, it can easily take more than an hour to go around. The explanations are easy for children to understand, and I saw many children eagerly looking at the exhibits. Since the museum is free of charge, it attracts a lot of visitors, especially on holidays.
Perhaps because the Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies of the Bank of Japan is in charge of managing the museum, security is very strict, and baggage is searched at the entrance. Although it's not prohibited to bring in devices that can take pictures, taking pictures of the exhibits is not allowed (there are several guards guarding the exhibition rooms at all times).
