石岡市の住宅街に囲まれながら、ひっそりと佇む神社。創建は8世紀半ばとされ、現在の場所に移されたのは10世紀半ばとされている。茨城県のかつての名前であった常陸国の総社であり、また地図で見てもまさに茨城県の丁度中央に位置する神社であるが、現在では境内の広さも神社としての雰囲気も、普通の神社と変わりない。特に肩肘張らずリラックスしながら参拝することが出来る。但し散策する場としては少し物足りないかもしれない。
境内には大楠が神木として植えられているが、1964年の火災の延焼により半分以上が焼かれてしまった。しかし完全に死滅することなく今も尚神木としてあり続けている。大木の生命力の強さを目の当たりにすることができる。

The shrine stands quietly, surrounded by the residential area of Ishioka City. It is said to have been founded in the mid-8th century and moved to its current location in the mid-10th century. The shrine is the head shrine of Hitachi Province, the former name of Ibaraki Prefecture, and is located right in the center of Ibaraki Prefecture on the map. The shrine has a long history and a very high status, but nowadays, its precincts are no different from those of an ordinary shrine in terms of size and atmosphere. You can visit the shrine in a relaxed atmosphere. However, as a place for strolling, it may be a bit lacking.
In the precincts of the shrine, there is a large camphor tree as a sacred tree, but more than half of it was burnt down in a fire that spread in 1964. However, it is still there as a sacred tree. The strength of the tree's vitality can be witnessed.
