詩人・書家、相田みつを氏の作品を一堂に会した美術館。漢字をあまり使わず、独特の書体で分かりやすい口語体の詩が展示されているため、老若男女問わず誰もが作品をその作品を読み、感じ取り、解釈することができる。1フロア分のみで、段差はあるもののスロープもあるため障碍を持つ人でも利用しやすい。
美辞麗句はほとんど出てこない。いずれも人の持つ本質や弱さが、そのまま素直に作品として映し出されている。多くの詩は、氏自らをそのまま映し出しているため、文字だけであるにも関わらずまるで鏡に映る自分自身が映っているようだ。そして単に文字を並べているだけでなく、墨の濃淡や配置、文字の大きさで、その詩の中の何を一番に伝えたいのか、見せたいのかが感じられる。そうした『自身の本質や弱さを素直に曝け出す』作品群が、見る人の心に響き、それでも柔らかな書体や『人間だもの』という言葉に、一縷の救いが見出されているのかもしれない。
英語でも詩の内容が併記されており、海外からの観光客もその詩の意味を解釈できるものの、あくまで併記に過ぎず『書』としての作品性までは伝わりにくい。書の構成や濃淡の意味などを学芸員に尋ねるといいかもしれない。
