武蔵御岳山の山上に鎮座する神社。青梅以西の人気の観光スポットの一つであり、東京都内でありながら豊かな自然の中に鎮座する。最寄り駅の御嶽駅から神社まで、路線バスとケーブルカーがあるが、標高は1,000m足らずで参道も舗装されているため、時間を要するものの駅からトレッキング感覚でアクセスすることも出来る（但しサンダルやヒール等でのアクセスはお勧めできない）。
土産物店や食堂が軒を連ねる参道を抜けたところにある三の鳥居から、約330段の階段を昇ると拝殿に到着する。段数こそ多いものの急な勾配ではないため比較的登りやすい。拝殿及び末社・摂社を含む境内は、それ程広くはなく、周遊するだけであれば30分程度で済む。しかし境内からの眺望は素晴らしく、神社を訪れる目的が参拝でなくても一見の価値がある。一方で、拝殿から奥宮までは本格的な登山コースとなるため、相応の装備が必要となる。
夏場は、都心では茹だるような暑さでも、神社周辺は比較的涼しく快適に過ごせる。その一方で天候は変わりやすく、急激な雷雨となることが度々あることに注意したい。激しい風雨の場合、ケーブルカーは運行休止となることがある。また、虫除け対策もあった方がより良い。
都心から気軽に訪れることが可能で、しかも日帰りで都心に戻れる山岳信仰の神社であるため、外国人旅行客の姿も多く見られる。

This shrine is located on top of Mt.Mitake. It's one of the most popular tourist spots west of Ome, and although it's located in Tokyo, it's nestled in a rich natural setting. The shrine is accessible by bus and cable car from Mitake Station, the closest station to the shrine, but since the altitude is less than 1,000 m and the approach to the shrine is paved, it can be accessed as if trekking from the station, although it takes some time(but, access in sandals or heels is not recommended).
After passing through the approach to the shrine, which is lined with souvenir stores and eateries, visitors enter the shrine through the third torii gate and ascend 330 steps to the hall of worship. Although there are many steps, they are not steep and relatively easy to climb. The precincts of the shrine, including the hall of worship and the smaller shrines and regent shrines, are not very large, and it takes only about 30 minutes to walk around the grounds. However, the view from the shrine grounds is spectacular and worth seeing even if the purpose of visiting the shrine is not to pray. On the other hand, the path from the hall of worship to the Okumiya Shrine is a serious hiking course, so appropriate equipment is required.
In summer, the area around the shrine is relatively cool and comfortable, even in the boiling heat of central Tokyo. On the other hand, the weather can be changeable, and sudden thunderstorms are frequent. In the event of severe wind and rain, the cable car service may be suspended. It is also advisable to take insect repellent.
This is a shrine of mountain worship that can be easily visited from the city center and can be returned to the city center on a day trip. For this reason, many foreign tourists can be seen here.
