菅原道真公の三男である菅原道武公が、道真公が太宰府に左遷された時に、父への尊容を刻むために建てられた神社。東日本における天満宮としては最も古く、湯島天神、亀戸天神とならび関東三天神と称される。
一方で、この神社は都心から離れており、周囲が住宅街に囲まれていることから、休日でも参拝に訪れる人は少なく、境内は終始静かである。特に鳥居から拝殿前の曲がり角までは木々に覆われており、風と葉擦れの音が爽やかで心地いい。さらにこの神社では鶏が数羽放し飼いにされており、時折境内に元気な鳴き声がこだまする。
2月下旬には、境内の梅園の梅が満開を迎える。梅園の規模はそれほど大きくなく、周遊するだけであれば20分とかからない。ふと立ち寄って梅を愛でながら境内を散策するのもいいだろう。

This shrine was built by Michitake Sugawara, the third son of Michizane Sugawara, to pay homage to his father when Michizane was transferred to Dazaifu. It's the oldest Tenmangu shrine in eastern Japan, and along with Yushima Tenjin and Kameido Tenjin, is known as one of the three Tenjin shrines in Kanto.
On the other hand, since the shrine is located far from the city center and surrounded by residential areas, there are few people visiting the shrine even on holidays, and the precincts are quiet all the time. In particular, the area from the torii gate to the corner in front of the shrine is covered with trees, and the sound of the wind and the rustling of leaves is refreshing and pleasant. In addition, the shrine is home to several free-range chickens, whose cheerful cries can be heard occasionally in the shrine grounds.
In late February, the plum blossoms in the plum garden on the precincts are in full bloom. The garden is not so large that it takes only 20 minutes to walk around. It is a good idea to stop by and stroll around the grounds while admiring the plum blossoms.
