Travel on bicycle vol.1 Italy

２００３年の春、時はイラク戦争勃発前後でした。友人と２人でローマからバルセロナまで自転車で南ヨーロッパを横断することにしました。まずはイタリア（＋バチカン）から始めましょう。

エリア イタリア

デジカメのメモリの容量が旅の最後でオーバーしてしまい、日本を出てから最初の２日間の写真が消えてしまいました。シンガポール航空で成田から台北、シンガポール経由でローマまで飛びました。シンガポールの空港の様子などここでアップしたかったのですが残念です。またローマの空港から市内への自転車での移動などもいろいろあって楽しかったのですがここでは割愛させていただきます。
長くてすいません。あと、旅行中で知り合った友達などにもこの旅行記を見て欲しいので以下英語での説明もいれさせていただきます。

フォロ・ロマーノ・・・だったかな？
ローマの石畳を自転車で駆け抜け、突如現れた巨大な遺跡群には驚かされました。自転車という、僕にとっては日常的な乗り物に乗ってローマ帝国の遺跡をめぐるのはなんとも不思議な感じであり、しかしそこの空気に溶け込むのには非常にうってつけの手段であったように思います。

What an extensive ruin in Rome!! It was just an amazing experience to explore a city of Rome on a bycicle.

旅のパートナー。怖いけど、根は優しいんです。
うしろの門のレリーフは見事です。

My partner, Monju. Looks scary, but actually is like an angel of a kid. Hahaha
By the way, don\'t you agree that the relief behind him is awsome?

犬の写真を撮るのは楽しいし、あとから見ても飽きません。
あと、会話のきっかけにもなります・・・

イタリアではどこでもピザを食べていました。ファストフードのピザでもけっこういけるし。セットにビールが着けられるのに感激。日本でもやればうれしいな。

Pizza from a fastfood restraunt. Not too specially tasty but decent, with a cup of beer.

まちを歩いていて、ふと建物の間にこんな風景を見つけるとぞくっとします。あと狭い路地とかも大好き。

A nameless garden, that suddenly came into my sight while I was strolling down a street in Rome. Hair-raising experience.

ローマイン。ローマの駅のツーリストインフォメーションで紹介してもらったユースです。ドミで１５００円くらいだったかな？

A decent private youth hostel called Rome Inn. Cost appx. 15euro... if I still remember it correct. A year after the trip is just long enough to wash my memory in detail away.

PACE anywhere
ＰＡＣＥはイタリア語のＰＥＡＣＥ
時期が時期だっただけにローマのみならずイタリア中よく見かけました。

友人が法王の謁見にバチカンへ行っている間、カラヴァッジョの絵画を見に行くつもりがこんなところへ迷い出てしまいました。
小雨の中のエルベ河畔。雑踏から離れ静寂の中にみる川面はなんとも趣深いものです。

While my friend Monju went to papal audience, I was trying to figure out where is a church with Caravaggio\'s painting, only to wander off at this place, Elbe River.
Liked the atomosphere there in flurry very much.

夜遅く斜塔の町ピサの安宿に到着。なかなか満足いく値段の宿が見つからずピサの町をぐるぐるとまわった後にようやくたどり着き、精も根も果てた友人。
疲労は心地よい眠りと忘れられない思い出をもたらす。

Monju, totally knackered after wandering around the city of Pisa for hours trying to find a cheap place to sleep.
Excessive fatigue brought us supremely comfortable rest in bed and unforgettable happy memory.

写真でみるのと実物では驚きが違いました。
現実のものとは思えぬ、自分の目を疑うようなシュールリアリスティックな風景です。

街角のピッツェリアで食べるピザも忘れられないほどおいしかったけど、こっちも忘れられない自作の夕食。

A handmade sandwich. Cheap but unforgettable taste.

久しぶりの快晴、何処までいけるか。
何も考えずにただひたすらこぎ続けるのも気持ちいいです。
ジャケットを見ればわかるように時はまだ３月半ば、冷たい空気を頬にきっていざ北へ。

No one knows where we were heading for. We only knew that we were biking to north.
Middle March in Italy\'s quite chilly even in a daytime.
Though, it\'s fun to bike without thinking anything.

ヴィアレッジョに到着。多分日本のガイドブックには載ってないけどリゾート地を兼ねた港の町です。

Here we come, Viareggio!!

こんな感じでね。

ヴィアレッジョの人はなんだか変です。
町に入っていくと町人がみな仮装していることに気づきます。

It can\'t be Halloween yet, it\'s still March.
Maybe the costom here is bit different.

夜ホテルでピザを食べていると外から人々の騒ぐ音と派手な音楽が聞こえてきます・・・
外へ出てみると・・・

Having pizza in a hotel, we heard massive sound of music and supposedly many people talking outside.

デーン！！！
祭りだー！！

Holly sh*t!! This must be some kind of festival going on here. And that explains about those people in funny outfits we saw in this town earlier today.

もっと広く、日本でも紹介されてもいいぐらいのとてもおすすめのお祭りです。何台ものモンスターや時の人をあしらった巨大な山車が町を行進する様は人々を熱狂させ、また僕はその非現実的な光景にのちのち夢の中でうなされることとなるのでした。

It was just awsome. You should check it out. I tell you.
A huge monsters and focal figures on wheels paraded around the city and people were all crazily dancing. They all seemed to have fun, and so did I.
Those parade floats, however, actually had a long-lasting impact in my dream at night, almost like a nightmere. Haha

こんなピザが破格の値段でどこでも食べられるのが僕のイタリアのイメージです。

Pizza like this one is availabe almost anywhere with incrediblly cheap price. That\'s Italy, for me.

ようやく自分の写真がありました。海沿いの道は港町から次の港町へ通じる断崖沿いのアップダウンがきついけど、一番高いところから坂を潮風を浴びながら猛スピードで下るのが（危ないけれど）やみつきになります。

Finally, it\'s me.
I was kinda addicted to biking along the coast. From one fisherman\'s villege to another. You gotta climb up steep slope real bad, but once you make it, you only run down hill super fast.

ついに到着ジェノバです。
僕の限られた経験の中ではイタリアで一番魅力的な街でした。
旧来北部イタリアの貿易の中心を担ってきたこの街には港町特有の怪しげな雰囲気がありました。

Guess where it is, it\'s Genova(Genoa)!
As for my personal, limited experience in Italy, this city comes as my most favorite city in Italy, probably because of its mysterious atomosphere.

What a mysterious feeling you got here...
It\\\'s an ally in old city, and I tell you, the whold old city\'s almost like a intricate maze.

地中海に沈む哀愁ただよう夕陽・・・

陽気な北アフリカの食料品店のおばちゃん・・・
ジェノバはなんだかあまり気取っていないから好感がもてるのでしょうか。

She, the owner of a North African food shop, was really cheerful and friendly.
All these things made me love this city, Genova.

この生活感があふれる感じが、あたかも自分までここに住んでいるかのような錯覚を引き起こし、それがまた心地く、ジェノバをますます去りがたい地にするのです。

Washed clothes made me feel like as if I really had lived there. And that made it even harder for me to leave there.

ジェノバ最後の夜、旧市街で”made in Japan”のラベルをあしらった長靴と工事用ヘルメットを購入。
ホテルに帰ってひどく後悔。

I equipped myself with long boots and a construction helmet from a shop in the Old city. Thought they were really cool.

Later, bitterly regretted in a hotel room.

But I finally made a cute smiley face for the last pic in Genova!

さらばジェノバ。こんにちは、また、海沿い。ずっと海。
次なるはイタリア最大の音楽祭の開催地、サンレモ。

Mate, don\'t look back, just keep heading forward to Sanremo, the venue for the biggest music festival in Italy.

夜サンレモに着くも、幸か不幸か当地は音楽祭の初日。
以前から名前は聞いていただけにうれしく興奮する反面、安いホテルは国内外から音楽祭に訪れる多くの人々のために軒並み値上がり、もしくは満室で、お金のない自転車旅行者に泊まるところなどわざわざ尋ねるのもためらわれるような雰囲気でした。
華麗な衣装を身にまとったセレブっぽいのや観客に多少たじろぎつつ街を後にした僕らは数キロ離れたベンチを見つけたのでした。

Arriving at Sanremo at night, we found all the cheap hotel occupied or showing a ridiculously higher price due to the music festival for which millions of people visit this city from both Italy and abroad.
Gaudy ladies actually made me shrink back.
We left Sanremo, and found this nice place with benches near beach, just a few miles away from the festival town.

でも。
寒いし、
目の前には時間にもかかわらず結構な人が行きかいます。
スケボーの少年らもちょっと怖いです。（結局話しかけてうちとけたけど。）
結局、体を動かす意味も含めてもう少し人っ気のないところを求め、もう少しフランス国境にむけてすすむ事にしました。
時はすでに深夜でした。

No way.
It was cold, plus we had a little problem which we weren\\\'t used to: sleeping in front of people walking by. And you don\\\'t know what kind people they could be.
Maybe, we might had been too a coward.
Yeah you\\\'re right, we, indeed, were.
Anyway, we then decided to go a bit further to find a better spot to spend a night.

暗闇の中、２つの山を超え、小さな村に使えそうなベンチを見つけた僕らは毛布にくるまり睡眠をとろうとしますが、今度は冷たい潮風と冷えたコンクリートが僕達を眠らせないどころか、体温をぐんぐんうばっていきます。
数時間の間、ガクガクと震えながらひたすら寒さに耐え忍びましたが、とにかく寝れるような状態ではありませんでした。
寝ることはあきらめて、荷を整えた二人はどこかペンションのあるようなそんな町を目指すことにしました。

Biking like 6,7miles in the dark, we finally reached a place where we had been looking for; benches by an empty beach.
However, it didn\'t take long to realize that it was wicked cold. We both kept shivering for a couple of hours, trying to sleep, only to learn that it\'s not possible.
Though we were dying, we just couldn\'t stay there. So, we decided to start biking again. Hopefully to the place in where we can get comfy beds.

そして朝。ようやくボルディゲラという町にたどり着きました。
ホテルが開く８時まで、しかたないのでビーチで遊びます。

We made it.
We somehow made it to a little town called Bordigherra, a resort for old people, it looked like.
And we found a nice pension, too. though, we had to kill time until 8am when it\'s open.

同じく時間をつぶしている様子。

We were actually dead tired. We just tried to look tough.

起きたら夜だった・・・

We slept like the dead, really.
And it was night already when we woke up.

丸一日寝て、さらに翌日の朝。
午前中からワインをたしなむ老婆が輝いていました。

I thought it\\\'s cool to see a group of old ladies had a wine party from morning like this.

何も考えずに、ただ過ぎ行く時間に身を任せる。
そんな贅沢なときをここでは送りました。

There can\'t be any better holiday than this, yo.

世話になった。
ボルディゲラのペンション。
そして長靴とヘルメット。

Good bye my lovely pension room, and Bordigherra.
Good bye my boots and helmet, too.

ようやく一カ国目終了。
長かったです。
