富士山の噴火による溶岩流によって出来上がった風穴の一つで、一年中0度～3度に保たれています。茹だるような真夏でも、入るや否や涼を感じますが、数分で上着が必要なくらいの寒さを覚えます！
江戸時代、富士山麓の風穴・氷穴から良質の氷が採れ、江戸の将軍や大名家へ運ばれたそうで、今でもここでは、氷の産出、そして天然の冷凍貯蔵庫として活用されています。富士山は自然科学の研究対象として盛んに研究活動が行われていますが、如何せん地上から見える部分に目を向けがち。こうした、長い年月かけて刻まれた地下の脈動にも目を向けると、如何に富士山とその一帯の自然の雄大であるかが感じ取れるかもしれません。
夏休みの、お子さんの自由研究の対象としてはうってつけだと思います。
ただ、洞窟内は非常に狭く、ごつごつとした岩が頭上すぐ上にあります。また解けた氷で足元が滑りやすくなっていますので、見学の際は細心の注意を払って下さい。
