世界的に見ても数はまだまだ少ない、写真映像の作品をコレクションし、専門的に展示している美術館です。これまで数多くのPhotographerが収めてきた写真について、単に芸術作品に留まらず、報道写真、身近なもの、写真の表現方法等に至るまで、様々な角度、様々な視点、そして様々な時代背景のテーマに沿って展示されています。
3万点近くもの収蔵作品があるものの、コレクション展以上に企画展に力を入れているようです。それこそ、絵画以上に収蔵以外の作品数も多く、技術的革新も相成って表現の場が他のアート作品に比べて急速に高く且つ広くなっているためでしょう。常設展示は無く、その時、また今の時代が必要としていることを念頭とした展示会が多く見受けられます。
写真の魅せる本当の力とはなんなのか、それには何が込められ、そして何を訴えようとしているのか、そうした程度の差こそあれど、『その時代、その場所』だからこそ訴えられる『力』のある作品を広く公開していこう、という意図があるのだと感じました。

It is a museum that specializes in the collection and exhibition of photographic images, which are still few in number in the world. The museum displays not only works of art, but also news photos, familiar objects, and methods of photographic expression from various angles, perspectives, and themes of various historical backgrounds.
Although the museum has nearly 30,000 works in its collection, it seems to put more emphasis on special exhibitions than collection exhibitions. This may be because the number of works outside of the collection is much larger than paintings, and the speed of technological innovation is rapid, so the opportunities for expression are rapidly becoming higher and wider than in other art forms. There is no permanent exhibition, and many exhibitions are held with the needs of the time and the present in mind.
What is the real power of photography, what does it contain, and what is it trying to say? I felt that the intention of the exhibition was to make widely available works with the power that can only be appealed to in that time and place, to varying degrees.
